hair for over 45 women- short , medium , long or doesnt matter?

It depends entirely on the woman - some older women just don't suit long hair, some look brilliant with it.

I would google people who have similar features (sqare face) and see what looks best, I agree with box though, it depends on the women, not so much the age.

the belief that all old ladies must have a certain ahorter hairdo stems from the fact that the fashion in their youth was just that...shortish...

there is no older person 'uniform'

I'm 37 and have started to grow my hair long again. Mine is extremely thick and can be wavy, downright curly, nearly straight depnding on what mood it's in! Yesterday it was curly on one side and straight on the other.

I thought short hair would be lower maintenence but it's just not worked out that way. On a bad day I looked like Susan Boyle. It's much easier to be able to tie it up on on it's awkward days and when it's down the length and thickness seem to frame my fearures better. Once it's long it will be staying that way.

Would agree, it depends on the woman. Some really elderly women look fabulous with long hair worn up. Depends on the cheekbones and the type of hair as well. Me I have short layered streaked blonde hair with wispy bits and it's dead easy!! A bit longer and it goes all wavy and grandma like - longer and I just look old.

What's really wrong is when 'older' women dye their hair really dark like they had when they were young. It doesn't match the colour of their skin.

I have kept my hair long-ish since my mid 20's. I am now 62,and my hair is shoulder length. I hate the fact that even women of my generation seem to go for very short hair once they reach a certain age.

And then pasta,alot of older women wear the same hair fashion that was popular in the sixties and seventies streaked or total grey yuck...

yes you have to lighten the colour otherwise it will look very obvious and very unflattering! I have long hair and the only nuisence I find is that its incredibly hot during the summer/muggy weather, my hair is very thick and wavy, If I cut it to shoulder length it resembles a bell lol!!

I don't mind very short hair as long as it's sort of scruffy and wispy. I know what you mean though Pasta. There is a certain short hairstyle that is uniform for older ladies, layered neatly into the back of the neck with sort of triangles in front of the ears, really neat and tidy and very old looking. I tried longer last winter as I always used to have long hair, but it looked awful. Really short and feathery is my best bet. Some older women look gorgeous with long hair, e.g. Twiggy - but she would look gorgeous bald.

A lot of women look very good with totally grey hair..it does suit some. My auburn/dark red hair is now a sort of honey blonde....I have no intention of colouring it now-though I did about ten years ago.

I have silvery blonde highlights which blend with the grey streaks I now find appearing. Nothing worse than dying your hair darker when you get older. Going lighter is more flattering.

I agree lofty (gosh-your avatar fooled me-thought you were a bloke!!!) I like that spikey / wispy look also...it's not so tight looking. I had 'twiggy' hair when I was younger......very short.

It also depends on your hairdresser - when my mum was alive there was a fairly unimaginative "shampoo and set" hairdresser in their village, all the old ladies came out on Thursdays looking like they were wearing wispy grey berets.

Speak to your hairderesser and see what she thinks. Luckily my hair grows quickly too so it's not taken long to leave my SuBo days behind. I do get it thinned out every few weeks otherwise it would be totally unmanageable no matter what length it was.

I used to dye mine jet black but agree that would look daft now, especially with the gray roots coming in every couple of weeeks.

I'm making myself sound really glamourous today, aren't I : (
