Hey - I damaged my hair terribly through use of straighteners which I regret so much. I;ve been asking you guys about hair growth promoting supplements. I'm hoping (since I think my hair is pretty much beyond repair) that if my hair grows faster the new hair which is not damaged will eventually grow out my damaged hair (in years and years granted!) Does this seem logical to you and also if your hair is damaged, is the new hair growing through going to be damaged too? Thanks x x x

I can't believe how long the fashion for dead straight hair went on for- similarly I don't expect the women who backcombed their hair into "beehives" everyday can believe what they put themselves through in the name of fashion!! I would buy some hot oil conditioners, and some other conditioners for overstyled/dry/permed hair and treat it very gently. A hairdresser will be able to snip off any split ends and nasty bits and make it feel all nice again.
The hair you have - visible hair - is dead or dying, so don't panic too much about repair, because new strong hair will grow to replace it all. Short of having a Number Two crop, it is sound advice that you go to a good salon and get some advice - they deal with these problems all the time, and will be able to advise you.
yellowduck, hair is in fact dead anyway so don't worry about people saying it's 'dying' or it's 'dead' you need to go to the hairdressers as already suggested and get a good cut and some advice from a professional. Invest in a quality shampoo/conditioner, Redken Extreme is brill for damaged hair and they also do an Intensive treatment which is very good, go to www.lookfantastic.co.uk and have a browse. Try eating a diet high in protein, eat lots of oily fish and yes Omega 3 is supposed to be a good supplement. I am also trying to grow out my hair and have been advised to take Sea Kelp tablets so I am off to buy some later. Scalp massages are good as they get the blood circulation going which stimulates growth.
Thanks everyone for the advice x x x
Casey - I used Palson professional straighteners. But to be honest I think it was really my fault that my hair got damaged cos I didn't take enough care about using protection products and was quite rough with tugs etc. I didn't realise until it was too late how damaged my hair was getting so don't worry too much if you're panicking - it was my own stupidity that did it for me! x x x
