drink

As as I sit at 6.31 in Sunday morning I do really have to take stock of my drinking habits.
I am drinking 94 units a week (female) and I am frightened. I drink extra special beer and since all my friends are around me getting chemo for various other reasons I need to reflect on this. I do only drink for boredom at night 4 cans of this stuff. but it is too much. Dont want to go to AA very much - will control this myself. Anybody advise me about the boredom. I never sit down all day and keep busy so look forward to this drink at night but sure I will have to give it or go down the route of perhaps a lighter beer or "wait for God" Any advice will be appreciated and thanks

Hi, can I be nosey? Are you single or do you live with family?
I too have just given up drinking....I'm bot even going to tell you what what units were per week, suffice to say it was higher than yours. I haven't found it as hard as I thought it was going to be but I work in the evenings and have plenty to keep me occupied through the day.
Do you work?

well done for acknowledging that you have a problem, connemmara - that is a very positive step. Certainly do try a lighter beer - and what about reconsidering your evening patterns, eat your evening meal later, go to bed earlier - less time to think about drink? Do you live on your own, is there someone who could distract you?
No I live on my own with a little dog who cant be left for long periods of time. I am retired right now so cant work and whilst I have wonderful friends they drink too although not as much as me. My GP whilst I love him I definitely would not go to him with this problem. I did go off drink some time ago for Lent 3 times so I know I can do it - it is just the boredom of the night and am not avid TV fan. Sorry to be macabre.
You need to find an interesting Hobby which will take your mind off your drinking.
Join a Group and attend their meetings, it could be a local Photography or Art Group or anything else which takes your fancy. You need to get out more Connemmara rather than sit in the House drinking every night. God is awaiting if you carry on like this !! ;-))

I too have not approached my doctor for help....last time I asked he just gave me a number to ring for out local dependency group...lol....cos I was really just going to go home and just ring them!!!
I feel a bit like I've lost a mate tbh, I know I said I have my kids [13&19] but their more of a reminder not to drink if that makes sense....not a substitute. I finished work at 11 last night and thought of taking a beer up to bed with me :0( Then I thought to myself...Do I want it or need it...answer, I didn't need it so I left it. Score another point to me!!
I don't know what the solution is for you, I know I can't do the group help route and it's harder for you as your mates drink....I don't go out or have many mates round so that solved that... I drink alone which I suppose is worse. I suppose now I am doing it for my health I don't want to die of an alcohol related illness and if I carried on the way I was it would have been the end for me.

conn... as you have accepted your alcohol consumption is too high, you must ask yourself. a) do you want to cut down on alcohol , b) to you wish to stop using alcohol, AA are not the only help available, have a look through the phone book plenty of " help lines available,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,good luck whatever you decide to do..............do not suddenly stop alcohol.
