My son in law is still in hospital, having antibiotics through drip every twelve hours. They are trying to get him to eat now to build him up as he has lost over two stones since been in there. Still also on strong painkillers. The doctor said this morning he has to stay in at less until monday. Then he will have an appointment to go in in five or six weeks time to have his gallbladder out.
sqad can I ask you a couple of questions please.? Is it possible he will have problems again when he has the gallbladder out.? And also how long do you think he will have to stay home before returning to work.? I know you havent got a cyrstal ball but your opinion would be grateful recieved. please. Thankyou x
In surgery, one never says never, but it is unlikely that he will have similar problems following the removal of his gall bladder, as the problems that he had was due to the ERCP.
As for returning to work, as you say, it will depend upon how is gallbladder is remove and if there are any complications. if it is done by keyhole surgery then 2 post operative weeks should be maximum, but if for any reason key hole surgery is abandoned and it has to be removed by opening his abdomen then it may well be up to 6 weeks before he is fit enough to return to work.
Thankyou sqad that is very helpful. The doctor at the hospital told him that this trouble he is having with the ERCP only happened 1 in 1000. but from what yoiu have said that isnt so. We went to visit him last night and he is still yellow and breathless. This morning they have him on oxygen again. So glad they havent let him out again.! As they did say until yesterday he could come home today. Once again thankyou for all your help. Brenda xx
Hi Lilacben.
I remember your last post regarding your son in law. I do hope he gets better once the gall bladder has been removed. You have all been through so much.
Thoughts are with you

If they remove the gallbladder laparascopically, he should be out fairly soonish. If they encounter problems such as adhesions, they may have to perform an open Cholecystectomy and he will require a slightly longer stay as an inpatient. It is not uncommon to loose a lot of weight whilst in hospital with this particular complaint and as for recovery time, it varies from patient to patient.
sqad. if this young man has acute pancreatitis, why would medical staff allow him to be discharged, " they said until yesterday he could come out today "
Hi everyone, well just visited SIL and he has had to have oxygen again today and he said the doctor said this morning his white blood count is going the wrong way. So I assume it is because of the infected pancreaitis, but why are they still dropping, is it because he is very low.? Not sure if he will be well enough to come out on monday but will have to wait and see. He also said he is very constipated and although they have been giving him different things nothing has worked. But last night they gave him a suppository and they worked but he was in terrible pain afterwards for three hours.?
<<<<but why are they still dropping, is it because he is very low.?>>>>>
Why are what still dropping?
If fit is the white cell count that they are referring to, then i shouldn't read too much into that as we don't know where it was before it started "dropping"
I had mine out by keyhole surgery last year, but that was preventative rather than curative as I had largely got over the acute pancreatitis I suffered 9 months earlier. They kept me in for two nights, but that was only because the operation was done late in the day and I live on my own.
lilacben i remember your previous post, i mentioned had the similar problem, and i took an age to get better after my gall bladder was taken out, it hurt like the devil, no heavy lifting after coming home, no doing anything strenuous, and that was for some months. Hopefully your son in law will get good care, after his op.
