Type 2 Diabetes cure - 500 cal a day
17 Answers
Someone at work said in Sweden trials had been made that proved successful in curing adult onset diabetes. It involved putting patients on a 500 calorie a day diet for a month.
Breif googling doesnt come up with any results. I'd be interested in reading more about it (if it exists!). Anyone else heard of it?

I read about this the other day...the trials were conducted using only a small number of patients...11 or something like that. I'd say a lot more research needs to be done.

its not for everyone, Mr S is a type 2 diabetic and an insulin rejecting patient, he is on tablets and 4 injections a day + gone blind because of diabetes + new renal problems as well, mentioned this 600 calories per day thing and the consultant told us - for someone like you never, do not be stupid enough to try.
Interesting study from Newcastle but a small series.
MRI scans show fat around the pancreas and this is thought to inhibit the action of insulin.
Now.....do people who do NOT suffer from diabetes have fat around their pancreas and do ALL people with fat around their pancreas have diabetes?
600cals a day is unrealistic for most Types 2 diabetic, and what happens after the 6 weeks? They will have to diet for the rest of their lives....but not on 600cals per week.
Interesting study, but i am yet to be convinced of it's practical value.

It was 11 people and after the trial 4 became diabetic
A close friend is type 2 and her consultant suggested a bypass for her (hugely obese) and that being only able to eat little and often and around 6 to 700 calories a day made her the ideal candidate.
I think the idea of the 8 week low cal drink diet with 3 portions of starch free veg was to be used as a boost to restart insulin production by reducing fat around the Pancras. This worked in all 11 of the patients but only 7 have been able to maintain it. The 'reversing' affect has certainly worked for the other 7 - so far

The diet gets rid of fat around the pancreas. You dont neccessarily have to be fat to have fat around your internal organs. In todays society of bad diets and lack of excercise the term 'Skinny on the outside, fat on the inside' has often been used to describe people who look fit and trim physique wise but their internal organs are clogged up with fat.
Adult onset diabetes runs in my family, my grandmother and mother both had it, not until much later in life (60 plus)I was diagnosed at 40. At 5ft 10 and 175lbs I'm not fat so not sure if the diet will help me. I guess 8 weeks out of my life is nothing if it cures it!
