Hi Lofty & Other Soya Milk Drinkers!

I saw Lofty talking about soya milk on another thread. Like her, I also don't like cows milk and have teeny bit in normal tea but none in coffee and obviously never drink it. However, I do like the idea of eating a cerial in the morning. I have tried the pouring yougurts on cerial and they just don't seem to have the correct consistency, and taste a bit odd so I'm not a big fan of them. What's this soya milk like? Does it taste like normal milk? Is there anything you can think of that it tastes similar to so I might get an idea?

Cheers :c)

I would be interested in replies here also, my IBS/reflux makes milk drinking a bit iffy
It does taste very similar indeed.

If you are not a milk fan, so nothing to compare it with, it will suit you just fine - get the 'sweetened' brand and you'll be away. You can use it in any cooking where ordinary milk is needed, and in tea or coffee.

This is the one... http://www.lactofree.co.uk/

I've heard it's good.
You could also try rice milk, or 'Oatly'...made from oats.
I actually prefer Soya milk on cereal than dairy milk, but it does taste strange in tea.
Hi China, :o)

Soya milks vary in taste. I personally prefer Morrisons cheapest long life one which is sugar free. If I am honest, it doesn't really taste of anything much, but it certainly doesn't taste like normal milk, or I wouldn't have it.

It's great on cereal in my opinion and wonderful for making porridge.

I don't cook a lot with milk, apart from an occasional cheese sauce for which I still use milk (because you can't taste it)

I don't have anything in tea or coffee. I haven't had milk in tea for about 35 years so wouldn't even be temped to try soya.

I could drink it, but I don't. It's not the most exciting of drinks, but you could flavour it.

Try cutting out milk completely in tea. If you only put a little bit of milk in which bother with any.

What I would suggest is that you buy a carton and just try it. Try a few until you get one that suits you. None of them have a strong taste so are all pallatable. But it's nothing like milk.

Hope that helps.
Go for unsweetened though, unless you have a very sweet tooth.
Oh, and I can't think of anything that tastes like it. Morrisons cheapest sugar free in carton is about 60p, so you won't be breaking the bank if you buy it and hate it!
As I said on that thread, I switched on my doctors recommendation for help with menopausal symptons.

It did not do much for me, but I have gotten used to the taste and I cannot drink cows milk anymore. It tastes funny to me.
Rice dream milk is also the same sort of thing, it is a little sweeter. You may prefer this.

There is a few of us here at work who drink soya and we have all got our own favourite brand. Mine is SoGood soya and I hate Alpro.
i tried soya milk and found it completely unpaletable. to me, it has a kind of mild almond taste to it and flavoured both tea and coffee. admittedly i only tried one brand but that just put me right off.
It depends on individuals taste buds I suppose like any other food. The thought of milk in tea makes me want to retch. I simply hate the taste of milk.

Mind you the thought of anything in tea makes me feel sick. To me tea has to be a 'thin' drink and anything that makes it 'thicker' is just dreadful.

Thank you LL and all the people who answered. I'm going to give it a try. Think I'll try sweetened and unsweetened and see how I go :c)
Good luck China. Do bear in mind though that there can be a very real difference in taste between the various brands. Try until you find the right one - don't give up. I like it because it's not creamy at all. The one I use is more the consistency of skimmed milk I suppose - reasonably thin.

I think that's the sort of consistency I'm looking for LL. I don't have a morrisons near me but I'm going to have a bash in sainsburys tonight... subject to memory, I have the most terrible memory outside the hours of 9am - 5pm!
Try rice milk, I think it's much nicer than soya (the ice-cream is lovely)
Do you like the idea of using a dictionary in the morning? The Spelling Police all drink soya milk, and would recommend the use of the sweetened kind, as the other kind tastes very tasteless indeed.

And if you don't like sweet things, the sweetened soya milk isn't nice. Depends on taste I suppose. Perhaps it's the fact that it hasn't much taste is why I like it. It lets other flavours come through.

Rice milk is OK, but does it have the same benefits as Soya?
I tend to avoid soya these days, ever since I read that they find it difficult or impossible to detect GM soya mixed in with the unadulterated stuff. (I avoid GM on principle: but could be persuaded to risk a little Soy Sauce on appropriate dishes.)
Try almond milk. It`s quite expensive in this country but it`s really nice.
I tried Oat milk once, but didn't like it.
