you can't tell. go to the doctor, and you will probably be referred to the hospital.

chances are it's nothing to get excited about, but you'll never know if you don't go..

best of luck :o)
Could you book in with your GP practice nurse for a well woman check up or similar and ask her to examine them and show you how to examine yourself properly and what to look out for?

If there is anything you are specifically worried about then see a GP asap to get it checked out and referred if necessary to be checked by an expert.

I'm pretty large chested so they have more lumpy tissue in them but I have felt the difference when I've had lumps, all turned out to be harmless fibrous adenomas though. They just felt different and there was skin tethering with one of them.

Thanku both, will visit my GP asap xx
Good question.....most people can make "lumps in their breast" if they prod around long enough, but the trick is to use the flat of the hand and if a lump is then found ten it is significant.

See you GP and let him/her have a feel if you are worried.
dee, not trying to scare you (as this is not relevant to you) but Sqad needs to understand that not all breast cancers can be felt externally. my friend is recovering from breast cancer that was found at a routine mammogram, and no amount of experienced prodding would have found it. personally, I've been to the breast clinic with a breast lump I've found, and an ultrasound scan has discovered others which even the specialists had checked for in examinations.

any lump needs to be checked with a GP. and when you're of a "certain age" you must attend mammograms when you are called.
My aunt is being treated for breast cancer at the moment. If you're worried see your GP. Not worth the risk.

I did't think that the OP was about cancer.

sqad does understand.

sara...agreed....so why personalize this thread against sqad?

sara....Most of the questions on AB could be answered by a final year medical student and i feel that your personal vendetta is misplaced on a serious topic.

Just give it e rest eh?

The OP isn`t saying they have found a lump, they are saying that ALL breasts are full of breast tissue so how does one differentiate between breast tissue and a "lump". An at home breast examination would be done with a flat hand because anything abnormal is easier to find. Seems a fairly uncomplicated question to me. My breasts have breast tissue (they`d be a bit strange if they didn`t) but I`m not going to go running to the hospital unless I feel something unusual by the method mentioned.
