Scaling and polishing isn't (according to the NHS website) part of a regular check up. (But what do I know? I've not seen a dentist for over a quarter of a century!)

I've just had mine - he checked my teeth, crowns and fillings, poked that little stick into my gums, then offered to do the scale and polish while I was there, so I didn't have to come back for another six months.
I had my check up this week and had the fillings and crowns checked. The scale and polish highlighted a sensitivity so we had xrays too. Nothing showed up so back in nine months. (unless I need to go sooner)

Chico your 'avatar' dentures reflect your non attendence at the dentist.
why do you ask, janzman? - didn't your dentist do those things?

Mind you, I forgot to add that my dentist isn't NHS, you can't get one of them for love nor money, round here.

My reason for asking is all my life dentists have checked the firmness of my fillings by probing with a small hooked instrument but my current NHS dentist just looks at them via a mirror and says the fillings are good ,quick scale and polish out within 15 minutes and a charge of £17 plus 20p for using a debit card ....do you think this is correct procedure
My dentist has never checked with a probe, but he was OK at spotting what needed to be done. And he is a good dentist BTW.
My dentist checks all fillings, crowns etc. This check up costs about £32.00 then if I need to go to the hygienist who only descales, cleans and polishes thats another £35.00. Dentist is NHS, Hygienist is private.
My NHS dentist wont do a scale & polish as part of a check up ! It will cost me extra...why is this ??? I feel Im being ripped off.
I went to the dentist last week for a check-up and because one of my back teeth had broken off.

He didn't do a scale and polish as I had one done last visit, he checked my fillings with 'something' metal (as usual) and checked my gums. He then put in a temporary filling to keep the broken tooth healthy until I decide what to do with it. Cost = nil (Scotland)
