I have to say that none of them have worked for me.
Volterol is stronger
I agree with beckersjay - I found them a waste of time. Got more relief from ice packs and hot water bottles.
I have never found them to be effective either....cannot say I have noticed a bit of difference after using them
I'd stick to warmth or cold with paracetamol.
If the pain is that bad instead of the gel go buy the voltarol tablets which are now available over the counter, though you have to be careful and take them after you've eaten, I've never found the gels to be of much use but I have arthritis which can be very painful at times - I dread damp or wet weather
For general aches and muscle strains, if minor, then it really doesn't matter which one you choose, although i agree with the posters above, I am not a fan of the gels.

For deep seated joint or bone pain, they are, in my opinion..... useless.

I'v got cartilage problems in my knee. Had an arthroscopy last year but I still get pain at the back of the knee. That is why I asked about the gels.
Mrs S made a wheat pack that gets warm in the microwave. It relieved the pain from inflammation round a cracked rib. You can get the wheat from a wholefood shop and sew up a bag from any old material. Gel was no good.
I got one from the doc called Phorpain, ten times stronger than those available over the counter, and it worked great on a dodgy elbow and (ahem) posterior.
I've never found Ibruprofen Gel of any use at all when I pull my back, it just doesn't go deep enough. I have how ever found it to be very good if you're going to have a tattoo, apply to the area being tattooed about an hour before going to the tattooists, it numbs the skin a treat.
