What is the best thing to eat for sustained energy for something similar to a marathon?

If you needed a lot of energy for 10 hours what would be the best foods/drinks or supplements to take, what ratios or what regime for the week or days running up to the event?

Carbohydrate is easiest for the body to deal with, so eat plenty the day before. 1 large loaf provides enough energy for a marathon, there is no point in eating more than that. The equivalent dry weight of pasta would be about 500 grams.

Thanks jomifl i was on a few sites yesterday and they all pointed towards carb loading.
