my problem is that I am now suffering an acute itching in my [look away now] rectum.I have tried various ointments and creams to no avail, it comes mainly at night, and needless to say I am not getting much sleep. Has anybody had a similiar problem, and found away to deal with it? thank you in advance.

Quite embarrassing, but as has been said, best talk to the doctor.

I'd advise going back to your doctor.
Could be thread worms or internal piles. Go see your GP.

Hello,I am currently seeing my doctor for unconnected reasons, I do not have worms, nor in fact do I suffer from piles, the itching is around the outside of my rectum.

Thank you all for your time, perhaps a little sunshine may do the trick !
I think you mean "anal" itching.....not "rectal" itching.

It has nothing to do with your iron therapy, so keep on with the treatment.

Corticosteroid creams should stop the itching.
I hope you will be sunbathing in the privacy of your own garden then!
There is also the possibility - remotely - that it could be threadworm, which is dead easy to shift with one over-the-counter dose.
Hi Mosaic, the OP has already said 'I do not have worms' - so that is that one ruled out then!
