Can anyone advise me about how to strengthen my finger nails? I have always had weak nails that flake and my thumb nails always split at the sides. I can't grow them to any decent length and therefore have never been able to wear nail varnish, as I don't want to draw attention to them. Is there a product out there that really works? I have tried various things years ago but none of them worked. I'm hoping there is now something that actually does what it claims! Many thanks.

Sorry polly I thought this was the same post as yesterday. You have the same problem I do and a good few others on here, have a look at the link that pasta has posted.
If any one came up with the perfect solution to our nasty nails-they would make a mint.
Hi Polly & everyone,
as a long term sufferer of finger nail problems I can offer you the following information. I had long though a connection in my particular case with my thyroid problem which I have had since the late 70s. Also I am a habitul 'picker' as described which causes trauma to the base of the nail. It is only really my thumbs that are affected by the 'picking' habit although the other fingers show signs of 'Koilonchia'. If you read through my link you may be surprised at the link to certain health conditions and nail trauma. Is this you?http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/a

... long 'thought'
This is a picture of 'Median nail dystrophy' which causes a kind of feathering in the centre of the nail ... plenty of info to go on ... as far as I know it is caused by trauma to the base of the nail. http://www.sciencepho.../media/256150/enlarge
I find filing mine gently so that they are more rounded with no straight sharp edges helps them grow without splitting, not so easy for them to catch and you can file off little weaknesses before they split across if you keep an emery board handy.
