My daughter has suddenly lost her sense of smell and taste. Apart from that she seems all right. I know you were an ENT specialist so can you suggest what has caused it. I have told her to go to her GP but my stomach has sunk into my boots at at the thought of what it could be. Googling it has not helped but made me think the worst.

Starby....first of all it is no big deal...not a life threatening situation in any way.

It is almost certainly a viral infection to cause such a sudden loss of sense and smell and itis a matter of chance as to if they will return.

A sinus infection or an allergy may have caused this and if so her taste and smell will return following the appropriate treatment.

However i must stress that a viral problem is the likeliest cause.

Yes, go to her GP and ask for an ENT referall.
Apparently there`s a cold bug going around at the moment that completely knackers your sinuses. Maybe it`s the start of that.

Thank you so much sqad. I am very worried but if it is not life threatening I can heave a sigh of relief. Will let you know what it is when she finds out. Most odd, I think. She said she did not want to eat anything because she couldn't taste it anyway.
