Endoscopy shows I have hiatus hernia and have been given list of dos and donts. Any fellow sufferers out there with tips on best way of dealing with this? I dont smoke and have been on the wagon for past 3 months when my tummy went on fire after every drink.
Have small meals. Don't overload your tum. Don't eat and drink at same time. You should have your liquid later. Don't lie down straight away after eating or drinking. Avoid acidy foods. Spicy foods don't bother me but a lot of people with hiatus heria can't take spicy food. Avoid fatty fried food You will soon learn what you can tolerate and what you can't. It is all about diet.
Use a higher pillow or prop the end of the bed up slightly, dont do anything which involves bending over (like scrubbing the floor, tying shoe laces, cutting your toe nails, etc) just after youve eaten, have your evening meal no later than three or four hours before bed, don't have anything to drink within an hour of going to bed so there's not a lot of liquid sloshing round in your tum, and finally take two spoons of gaviscon as you go to bed. No probs :)
My medication mainly keeps mine at bay but ever now and again I get a bad episode. Usually it is a glass of dry wine in the evening or a curry. When I get into bed I can feel my throat burning and sometime I am just dropping of to sleep when I suddenly have to sit up because my throat feels like it is going to close over and I cough, sometimes it makes me sick. That is my own fault so I tend to try not to repeat it. xx
