Is the person taking anything to protect their stomach such as acid medication like omeprazole/lanzoprazole?

What kind of pain is it for? I understood Naproxen was meant to be easier on the stomach.
Question Author
If for hip pain.
Tramadol effervescent tablets......50 mgms ( I think)
Question Author
OK. Thank you both. I'll get back to the doctor and ask if they'd change the prescription.
Though he might say, 'who do you think you are? Do you want to write the script yourself?'
As Eve says, the answer might be an antacid taken a little while before the co-codamol, or possibly even as simple as making sure that it is taken after a meal.

Tramadol tends to have 'away with the fairies' side-effects for many people, sqad? I hated the stuff and was much happier with codeine/paracetamol based pain relief for my knee.
sandy.......LOL......that's would be my approach.

Can't you take Ibuprofen ?
dave...yes you are right about Tramadol...a bit OTT on my part.
what kind of stomach problems? If you mean constipation, then tramadol is just as bad

This is for my sister. She has a very painful hip which seems to be gradually getting worse. I'll make another appointment with the doctor and explain about the stomach problems and ask if there's anything else she might take.
A lot of painkillers cause constipation. Often given in conjunction with movicol or similar.
Question Author
She says that the medication gives her a sore stomach. Though you'd think that a strong painkiller wouldn't do that.
Do they know what is wrong with the hip? Just in case there may be other things which could help like a steroid injection?
you might want to clarify what she means by sore stomach
And check that it is actually the painkillers causing it.

I got a stomach ulcer after using some cheap painkillers for something.
Question Author
The Dr mentioned a hip replacement. But it was all I could do to get her to go and see a GP so I don't see that happening. We'll go back and ask about a change of medication.
I had my stomach reduced and was prescribed slow-release Tramadol for my ankle problems. It doesn't affect my stomach at all and I'm not as away with the fairies as I would be with the normal Trammys.
do you actually mean effervescent or do you just mean liquid? Is it because she can't swallow tablets? as many can be crushed and mixed with jam, honey or yoghurt. If the tablets she is taking now are effervescent, it may be the fizz that is making her stomach sore...I can't do fizzy type tablets at all.
I have been taking Co-Codamol 30/500 for several years. It does cause constipation, but if that is what your sister is bothered with then the doctor could prescribe something to alleviate that. If it is definitely a stomach upset and not constipation, then please make sure that she takes the tablets with food, this should stop any stomach upsets.
Some PPI cover could help to prevent GI symptoms.

Would help to know what you're taking the Co-Codamol for...
Sorry, just had a proper read through.

Depending on the cause of the hip pain (degenerative, inflammatory, mechanical) there could be other analgesic options or even an IM Depo-Medrone 120mg to settle an acute flare (if inflammatory).

Etoricoxib tends to get a good response.
