Retina Macular Hole Repair
6 Answers
My husband is having a hole in his retina repaired on Friday (he is 75). If there is anyone out there who had the same procedure I would appreciate any reassurance about recovery, when he can drive again etc etc. Thankyou.

Here are a few general remarks, but they may vary from unit to unit but your husband will be given instructions on discharge.
The method of repair will almost certainly done by inserting a gas bubble over the hole after removing the gel of the eye (vitrectomy)
Depending upon the unit, your husband may be asked to lie face down for a couple of weeks OR a few hours only during the day.
Flying is out for at least 3 months.
His sight will be poor initially but will improve.
Pain should not be a problem.
The above comments are generalisations, but instructions will be given on discharge.

Head down for two weeks. Don't worry he wont be able to see for a couple of weeks and then gradually as the gas behind his eye disperses. It will be like a black semi circle in the eye getting smaller each day. Must not lay on his back in bed, must lay on stomach. Head up for a few minutes every hour. Get a cushion, lay head on table, get some audio books. I had op around six years ago and now have 20-20 vision. He will need cataract surgery after a few months, this is fast and very easy surgery. Macular hole surgery took hour and half, I had local anaesthetic, not general, absolutely fine. I went to Moorfields London and would recommend it if you need eye surgery. Good luck he will be fine.
