Crohns Sufferer And Chickenpox

My mother (aged 74) has recently been diagnosed with Crohns disease and is currently taking tablets that suppress her immune system. Today her great -grandson has come down with chickenpox and her nurse at the hospital has told her to avoid contact with him for 3 weeks.My mum can't remember if she has had chickenpox herself. She seems reluctant to wait this long without seeing him so I just wondered what if any implications ignoring this advice may have.

Could it be anything to do with contracting shingles if in contact with someone with chickenpox. I understand this can be a very painful condition. Could be some other medical reason.

I got chicken pox as an adult & believe you me I've never felt as ill in all my life. I was a fit young man in my thirties & it knocked me for 6.

I think that chickenpox is not contagious once the spots have crusted over, so he shouldn't have to stay away for the whole 3 weeks.

Didn't think you could catch shingles from chickenpox. The usual advice is that they are not contagious after the spots have scabbed over so she thinks she will be o.k after 1 week but there must be a reason the nurse said avoid contact for 3 weeks.

Whether or not, your mother has had chicken pox and knowing that she is taking immunosuppressive drugs, if she does catch it from the child the consequences may involve, pneumonia,septicaemia or meningitis.

Take the advice of the nurse.
