Appetite Suppressant

Can you get any type of appetite suppressant on prescription?
I've posted before on here that Im currently on Mirtazapine and one of the side effects is increased appetite and cravings for certain food stuffs...in my case sugar. Ive also given up smoking (11 days now) and find myself eating more than ever. Ive put on nearly 2 stone in the last couple of years and dont want to put on any more, I want to loose it.
I'm sure ive heard something about appetite suppressants but dont know if they are available on prescription.
Thanks.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.no.....no good doctor would prescribe an appetite suppressant, particularly for someone with mental health problems. the solution is willpower and a good diet. i sympathise - i am on quetiapine, venlafaxine and sodium valproate, all of which make me hungry 24 hours a day. it does my head in, but there really is nothing out there that will reduce your cravings/feelings of hunger. do NOT get slimming pills or others off the internet. often they are meds that could interfere with your prescribed stuff and have hideous side effects themselves. after all....you do not want to end up nuttier than you are to start with!
nailit: I had the same problem as I'm assuming most do when on anti depressants. Most of them seem to have the awful side effect of either increased or decreased appetite. Do you suffer from sickness at all? I'm being very careful as to how I ask you what medication you are taking - I don't want you to feel you have to disclose anything you don't feel comfortable with.
Nailit: The reason why I ask is because if you speak to your doctor they might be willing to put you on Domperidone. I have, in the past,
taken Domperidone for a few weeks after being put on Fluoxite because Mirtazipine wasn't working for me. I might of been on it longer, I really can't remember. It helped me with the 'weight gain' problem as well as it speeds up digestion and metabolism. I wasn't actually given it as an anti-emetic but actually as a way to help with my stomach and how quickly it 'processed' food. I was open to the doctor, as I always am, that I was concerned about the fact I'm was eating more and more - sometimes 7 times a day, at times getting up at 2am and eating bowl after bowl of cereal.
I'd advise you to go to your GP and talk to them about your concerns. If you can't see your GP then speak to your mental healthcare worker. They were happy enough to put me on it so I don't see why they won't do the same for you. After all if it's making you feel low, which in itself needs sorting as soon as possible.

Nailit: Sorry that paragraph was a little 'all over the place'. I hope you can read it alright - just!
Depression as you know is a 'female canine' and the added stress of worry about your weight really isn't going to help. It's so easy to say what you can and can't do but actually getting to a positive outcome feels like a huge battle.
I hope you manage to get things sorted. I often think about you and wish you the best. One very annoying but typically true saying that people always used to say to me "Things can only get better" - I'm still not sure if I agree with that statement :) There's a lot of people here thinking about you and wishing you well so try and keep tha chin up mate :)

Thank you wolf.
Dizmo, I can relate to the getting up at 2am thing to eat. My particular craving is sugar and choclate, ive never really had a sweet tooth until I started mirtazapine. the cravings are unbearable at times to the point where ive walked half a mile in the rain in the early hours to the 24 hr tesco just to get a bar of choclate.
I mentioned it to a shrink last year but he just brushed it off.
As I said ive recently given up smoking and dont want to gain any more weight.
