I was diagnosed with an interactive thyroid 9 years ago and take thyroxin every day and have 3 monthly blood tests and my levels are correct the problem is I really suffer badly with a sensitivity to the cold. I can go for a 1/2 hour walk and end up under a blanket for the rest of the day! It's manly my bottom and thighs that are effected. I usually take a bath which eases it but I was wondering if there is something else I can take or do to make it stop! I've got thermals and hand warners but nothing works!

I doubt very much if your symptoms have anything to do with your thyroid problem.

These are extremely odd symptoms for which i have no tangible answer.

Sorry.
Are you eating properly?
Do you have warming food like hot porridge in the morning?
Hot soup?

Yes I'm very conscious of doing all the right things it just never goes away for long I don't get it as much in the summer unless I swim in the sea which I've stopped and it's worse if I drink alcohol which I've stopped
it does sound like you are a tad under, going by how my mater suffers, a propensity for the cold as well when she is so-called normal, what level of medication are you on?
The first thing that crossed my mind was Reynaud's Disease.

150 I take it religiously

I don't get the blue finger tips or toes it's just my bottom and thighs
Are you on Blood pressure tablets? I get that cold feeling in the same place as you almost one hour after taking Ramipril BP tablets at night - my GP says it could be the sudden drop in BP levels which causes it. It doesn't happen every night but about twice a week.
Shellzy, are you considerably overweight or underweight?
maybe try another layer of clothing or invest in better quality thermals ?
that's quite high....

are you getting any of the following:
dry skin
feeling tired
constipation
lifeless hair
hoarse voice
fluid retention
irregular or heavy periods

and any other medicines like a lithium base or Amiodarone (Cordarone) - that's an antiarrhythmic medication?
Question Author
I don't take any other medicine or get any other problems I'm a little over weight but not obese and I'm very active
it may be just one of those things that goes with hypothyroidism. You may want to mention this to your doc though just in case you are 5mg too low....
DTC.....but she isn't suffering from hypothyroidism........her 3 monthly thyroid tests are normal.
sqad, they can move off quite quickly.....my mother has it and hers bounces around a fair bit, she's been on as low as 80mg of levothyroxine up to 125 and currently 115.
I find that if I`m out in the cold for long, the parts that have some fat on them (upper thighs etc) stay cold for ages. I think it`s just because there is less blood near the surface because it`s just fat there. I would think that massaging the area after being in the cold would help - either with your hands or with a massager in the shower.

Thanks everyone! I've made an appointment to see my gp so hopefully things will get better
237SJ....that to me is nearer the mark.....the presence or absence of fat.

DTC.....mmmm! not my experience and particularly someone who has constant normal thyroid tests.

But if you say it can and does.......then that is not to be ignored.
Shellzey, I'm on 150mg of thyroxine. I too can be sensitive to cold, not particularly in any specific area. 237sjs answer sounds logical x
What thermals do you wear Shellzy?
