This good old first aid favourite is no longer available in the UK and neither is the TCP equivalent. Much better than the cream for some applications can anyone recommend an antiseptic ointment that can still be purchased over the counter. Also, if anyone knows why these products have been withdrawn I'd be pleased to know. Thanks in anticipation for any replies.

The brand was bought by Bayer and they discontinued the ointment.

I bought some recently
Boots still sell it. Not aware it's been discontinued.

Thanks guys for the quick replies but it's the ointment (pink, thick and oil-based) that I'm asking about, not the thin water based version - i.e. 'ointment' not 'cream'.
There was a thread about this last year, maybe some answers on there.

They still do it in my local chemist...next to the Savlon!
Sorry for repeat prescription.
I have some in a tube!!
I also have some in a tube but that is the cream. Catmando means the tub of thick stuff which according to wiki was discontinued in July 2014.

I think the ointment fell out of favour because it is messier to use and leaves stains and greasy marks on clothing.
Around 35 years ago, when I was doing my first aid training, the nurse taking the course and the doctor taking the exam were both firmly stating that the sale of antiseptic creams ought to be made illegal. That's because they do little to inhibit the development of bacteria but, it seems, a great deal to inhibit the growth of new tissue. So I'm hardly surprised if some sales outlets are finally getting the message!

However, if you insist on buying the stuff (which I would NEVER do), it seems that Boots still sell it:

Yes but that's the cream Chris, catmando wants the ointment (what a funny word ointment is)
Some years ago I went into a chemist's to buy some Liquid Paraffin, only to be told, "We don't sell that stuff anymore, it's bad for you."

I replied, "Tell that to my mother and grandmother!"
