My Nephew And His Wife Were Long Time Users Of Sunbeds And Would Soak Up The Sun On Their Holidays.

I've just heard that he's had a mole removed from his leg. Hopefully that'll be the end of it but in a worst case scenario would earlier intervention have made a difference?

My dad recently had several bits removed from his skin, after years of working in the sun, with no sunscreen ever used.
It is frightening, and he probably will be just the same this summer, even though the dermatologist told him to be careful. He thinks sunscreen is for wimps.
People like their tans; I'm the same, but I'm careful about using high factor now.
Sandy, perhaps you should encourage your nephew and his wife to do the same.

In my opinion (I'm not a medic) reduced sunbathing and non-use of sunbeds would have reduced risk, but other factors are also involved.
In April 2013 I was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma (stage 1a?) on the left leg about 6" above my ankle which was removed and I had a skin graft.
I have never used a sunbed and rarely sunbathed without a highish factor suncream/lotion. However, I do have fair skin, blue eyes, fair hair and am getting older (65+) which puts me in a higher risk category.
Apart from removal I then subsequently had a sentinel lymph node biopsy to confirm an all clear status. I still go for 6 monthly checkups and was told I can expect to do so for at least 5 yrs.
Has your nephew got a result on the biopsy yet?

Yes, early intervention is good and most times it works!

They got red/brown whilst my sister & I played in the pool.

Me, I cover up in a long sleeved cotton shirt 2 sizes to large, wear sun block factor 50, wear a broad rimmed hat, sunglasses and avoid direct sunlight! Fussy? No just playing it safe!

Ummmm Yes I'm the same. never Sunbath , cover up and try to avoid Sun exposure as much as possible, but I still get compliments on my 'PermaTan '
I'm talking about those who regard a tan, the deeper the better, as a religion to be 'topped up/ worshiped ' as often as possible. Yet they still express views that can only be regarded as 'Racist' based solely on skin colour.
I have lived 3 years in central Africa and 3 years in the Middle East, yet in those places everyone tries their best to avoid Sun and tries to look as pale as possible.
