Esomeprazole V Omeprazole

Question for Sqad and any medics! I have been taking omeprazole for years and years, and recently tried stopping it to see if it would help neuropathy in the soles of my feet. It didn't, and my stomach acid got worse. My GP gave me esomeprazole to try. It seems much stronger- I only need one tablet per day instead of 2, but also my feet seem to throb and hurt more, and my back pain has got really bad- very stiff to the point I can't stand up straight or go from lying down to standing up without holding onto things. Would you expect esomeprazole to have side effects like worsening pain, and to be stronger than omeprazole? Should I go back to omeprazole?!

I cannot convince myself that there is any difference in activity or side effects between the two drugs. I don't think it matters which you take.
I cannot convince myself that the two drugs have anything to do with peripheral neuropathy.......making it better or worse.

No I wouldn't and be careful about blaming the pain on Esomeprazole.

Me personally?....Yes i would go back to Omeprazole as it helped your heartburn and had no effect on your foot problems.

I have taken Lansaprazole [same horse different name] since 2010 I can't say it had any side effects at all.
However as a result of Chemotherapy in 2013 I suffered neuropathy. My feet burn and ache terribly. I was prescribed LYRICA.

Have you had any side effects with the Lyrica, Liz? It looks horrendous when I read the side effects - I am very wary of anything that changes brain chemistry as I do feel that my brain is the only thing I have which still works well! I tried Amitriptyline which made me feel 'serious' and morose, in the 2 days I took it, and I became a zombie and couldn't see straight. Sqad, is there anything else which can help with diabetic neuropathy, even though I'm not diabetic?

Scarlet....you can't have diabetic neuropathy if you are not a diabetic......there are many causes of peripheral neuropathy including alcohol abuse.
treatment is complicated and dependent upon the cause and also the symptoms e.g pain or pins and needles. I would need to know much more about the cause and investigations that you have had.
Your GP would be your best guide.

oo er mrs lansop and omep are both associated rarely with neuropathies

which surprises me as I was certain I would get a google-whack when I googled omeprazole neuropathy - think about stopping the drug and going back to ranitidine ?

Liverpool Liz' neuropathy is likely to be 2' to vinc
and unhelpful to this discussion ( axonal , toxic )
whcih I also have and which goes within six months of stopping vinc

Vincristine a Chemotherapy drug.

vinc - vinca alkaloids (my Mum was in Vinorebine which is one such drug)

and it`s Vinorelbine (doh). Regardless of the spelling, it didn`t work anyway
