Preauricular Cyst

Preauricular Cyst

My 4 year old grandson has a preauricular cyst and two courses of antibiotics have been ineffective. It is about the size of a marrowfat pea and is quite painful. At his last consultation last Saturday it was decided that an operation to remove the cyst was necessary- is this a straightforward procedure and what are the chances the problem could recur in the future? Any help appreciated. Many thanks

There is no such thing as a straight forward operation but as operations go, this is as straightforward as most.
Is there just a cyst or an associated fistula (tract) and if so the operation might be a little more complex, but no big deal. An E.N.T surgeon should make a competent job of this, although there may be a chance of recurrent infections (unlikely if the fistula is excised.

Yes there is a fistula which started to discharge then dried up and formed a crust. Thankyou for your help and reassurance.
