My daughter went for a scan today as doctor thought she may have endometriosis. They discovered a massive cyst on one ovary and she's been referred urgently to a consultant. She's worried out of her mind and I don't know how to reassure her. Is this normally found to be merely a harmless cyst??

Hopefully will be found to be benign, Smowy.....there is no way to be sure until she sees the specialist consultant. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your daughter. x

Sqad will know more, but you might need to wait till the morning, if he doesn't see this tonight.
NHS choices, useful site .

Thanks for that info jno and thanks guys. Think I might pay for her to be seen privately. She's got herself in such a state.
jno's link is very encouraging, Smowy.

I hope so : (
Always think positive, Smow.

The quicker she gets seen by a specialist, the better, in my opinion. And it won't prolong the worry too.

Thankyou yogi. She only had a baby 8 months ago
As she is pre-menopausal (being your daughter) the chances of the cyst being cancer are small...exceedingly small (less than 1% of all ovarian cysts are cancerous). That is all that can be said at this stage until she has had a biopsy.
Ovarian cysts may be associated with endometriosis, which you mentioned in your OP.
The odds are vastly in favour of your daughter's cyst being benign( not cancerous).
