Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening

I've had a letter to attend the above. Has anyone undergone this procedure, as I've never heard of it.

OH had it done last year. Nothing to the examination. I think his result was good and meant he had no need to attend again. I believe any screening is worth having done.

Not me, but my dad has. They found a huge aneurysm. When he was in surgery to repair it it was about to pop. He's still with us, thankfully, but wouldn't have been if he hadn't had the screening.

I think the screening is for men of a certain age.

Yes, I've had this. A very simple procedure. Gel is spread on your stomache then a scan instrument passed over it. Takes about 10 minutes. The worst part is that the gel is cold!

I had mine done when I was 64. Apparently if you don't have an aneurism by 65 you won't develop one.

Some years ago my next door neighbour had an aortic aneurysm, he was lucky to survive, it was touch and go for a while. It was before screening was available.

Obviously an error in assuming you are older than you are Melv, but you could just pop along and get the test anyway :-)

It may be that the NHS are rolling out the screening programme to younger men now. Why don't you ring the phone number and ask if it is correct. There must be a contact number on the invite.

no big deal
as they fellas say - ultrasound scan of abdo and measure the size of the aorta - I think 10 cm is the cut off size ( or 2.5 cm or something - they obviously know )
and then off you go

works well - the results from surgery if the aorta is too large is good

being in the 'wrong' screening group is irrelvant
i still get asked to go for ca colon screening even tho they should know I have had it

As everybody says a very simple procedure and they give you the results straight away.Well worth having it done as if you do have a problem its better to know about it while they can treat it.

My husband was lucky to survive an aneurysm. He was in intensive care for 5 weeks so please take up the opportunity if it is offered.

My 43-year old cousin had an aortic aneurysm; he left two small children. Get it done.

5.5 cm or above is where they will offer you a procedure to hopefully prevent rupture. Worth having it done as it is a simple ultrasound and aortic aneurysms are mainly asymptomatic.

Just missed the start of the national screening programme and had it done after it was mentioned to me. My Dad suffered an aortic aneurysm at the age of 68 and he couldn't be saved. I was found to be OK - and it was also stated that the procedure to repair the aneurysm was pretty routine in most cases.

Never heard of it or been offered screening for anything ,perhaps they don't bother after a certain age
