Hoppy's food bank thread has reminded me of all the miracle supplements we had to take as children to make us big, strong and healthy.
I hated the cod liver oil off a spoon but at least I was always first for the spoon......my siblings down the line got cod liver oil and dribble from everyone in front.
Malt extract with cod liver oil was preferable when it arrived in our kitchen.
I loved the little bottles of orange we collected from the clinic......I guess those were free or with coupons?
Every night my father who came from a family of big tall strong and fit folk would line us up for a small glass of Guinness frothed up with milk and sugar.
The worst was when my mother went through a long period of giving us a square of Brooklax/Exlax....can't recall which......every day.
Once, not able to swallow it, I climbed on the sitting room windowsill and spat it out through the little top window. The wind caught it and the goo was still sliding down the window when my mother came in..... :-(
I'm fairly healthy....very strong.....but god knows what happened to the big and tall bit.......x
the dripple from everyone in front kept their immune systems in good workout mode, sounds rather healthy ;)
I can't imagine swallowing any time of oil, let alone cod oil how vile. At least pop a capsule round that oil! I guess capsules weren't invented back then.. Maybe in time.
Thankfully the only horrific medicinal child thing i had to ever injest was that grim power known as dioralyte. Usually after i have had a runny poop.
I didn't mind cod liver oil, but Virol - cod liver oil with malt - I found utterly disgusting. I grew up (some say that is debatable) to be a strapping 6'1", 18st prop forward.
I loved Virol but wasn't so keen on Syrup of Figs which was administered on a Friday night 'to keep you're bowels open'. I seem to remember something called Haliborange too
Apparently I loved Virol when I was a baby but hated the smell as I grew older. My parents weren't one for supplements and medicines but twice when I had what must have been post viral fatigue, I got a "tonic' from the doctor which tasted delicious...I am guessing it was a multivitamin syrup.
Sqad I don't think it was branded on the bottle....just a white label that said something like "the tonic, one dessertspoonful twice daily" I think chemists then used to have big bottles of it and just decant it into smaller ones...this would have been late 50's early 60's
