It won't do any harm - try it
Lots of people would use WD40....I think that a silicone lubricating spray (one is made under the WD40 brand name) would be a better bet.
Silicon lubricant would be a lot longer lasting.
Here's another one...useful for lubicating just about everything, without the WD40 pong........

There are a few things you can do

Try the spray Lube technique first if that doesn't work turn your attention to the pedals themselves and then finally back to the cleat bolts.

This usally fixes the issue. You can watch a step by step video of how to do it here http://www.newscroc.com/Fix-Squeaky-Pedals
Don't use WD40, it's just a quick fix that dries up after a fortnight. It was designed as a cleaner and removes any of the original lubricant that was left and then dries up itself. It's popular because it works straight away but in the long term is no good. Use Duck Oil which also comes in a spray
sure it's not your ankles?
