Omeprazole And Mild Asthma Attack.

I have pretty bad acid reflux and have to take 2 Omeprazole every morning. If I miss a single dose I’m in extreme discomfort. Well we went away for day/night on Sunday and as soon as we arrived I realised I’d missed that morning dose in my hurry sorting bags out etc. Not only that but I’d forgotten to pack Monday mornings dose.
By the time it came to get train home on Monday morning I was in an awful lot of pain. So when I got home I took a double dose ie both days at the same time. A couple of hours later I started to get really out of breath and was struggling. I was also very hot. Teensmow was here and he started to panic a bit as I do have asthma but it’s well controlled. Took inhalers but was out of breath and felt Ill all day and evening, and still don’t feel right to day. Would there be a connection between taking double dose and becoming very very out of breath, or just sheer coincidence?

Extremely unlikely that you " asthma" attack had anything to do with your double dose of omeprazole.

No expert on the side effects even though I take these daily, it's never a good idea to double up doses when a medication is missed unless instructed to by a professional.

If you are ever stuck again without them, buy Nexium or similar over the counter.

It's all in the notes that come in every pack, including not taking a double dose.

Mr Smow reckons he’s looked on the NHS website and it says do not double up, and it can cause shortness of breath etc but I’ve never heard of that.

What if I take too much?
It's very unlikely that taking 1 or 2 extra doses by accident will cause any problems.

But you should check with your doctor if you have taken too much and have any of these symptoms:

flushed skin
feeling sweaty
a fast heartbeat
feeling sleepy
blurred vision
feeling confused or agitated

Not much on breathing or breath apart from:

"Contact a doctor straight away if:
you get a skin rash that may include itchy, red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin
you're wheezing
you get tightness in the chest or throat
you have trouble breathing or talking
your mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat start swelling
These are warning signs of a serious allergic reaction. A serious allergic reaction is an emergency."

I’m not doubting it, I’ve just never heard of it. Well I won’t be doing that again. Out of interest, can I take any over the counter medicine ie Gavison with Omeprazole as I’m still really uncomfortable.

It isn't just that Sqad, surely there are few instances where you are advised to double dosages after missing a dose or two?

Sorry to hear of your problems Smow.

I take Omeprazole and the leaflet that is included in every box I take states, 'Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you'.

To be honest, I would think this advice would apply to all prescribed medicines. I know I would never double up medication to make up for a missed day. You say you still don't feel right, so why not ring your surgery, or pop into the chemists and have a chat with the pharmacist?

My Lansoprazole says 'Do not take indigestion remedies 2 hours before or after you take this medicine'

My doctor is in my road - think I’ll try and pop in or call them but I’m waiting for a delivery at the moment.
I know it’s not an urgent thing at all but it can be incredibly uncomfortable.

The leaflet accompanying prescribed medication is there for a reason. Read it .

Anne......LOL.....if she had read the leaflet how would that of helped her question which was if there was a direct relationship with her drug overdose and her symptoms?

What if I forget to take it?
If you usually take it once a day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it's within 12 hours of your next dose, in which case skip the missed dose.
If you usually take it twice a day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it's within 4 hours of your next dose, in which case skip the missed dose.
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
