Corona Virus. Would You Self-Isolate?

I wouldn't. I think everyone is behaving like Cpl Jones and massively overreacting. We don't get all this every year when thousands die of the flu virus. And no-one can stop the thousands dying. If the medical people had a cure for flu, thousands wouldn't die every year from it, would they?

Anyway, I'm flying to Malta on Thursday. Not bothered about it, but the Maltese authorities have cancelled our memorial event that should have been taking place in the Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa. Shame really. We had the President Of Malta attending and a few more dignitaries.
Another massive overreaction, as the last I heard there were only 5 cases of CV reported in Malta. As opposed, probably, to hundreds of flu cases.

Would you self-isolate if you had the flu? I know the flu is terrible and you wouldn't be able to socialise anyway, but we're being told to take all these precautions amidst masses of people catching the flu.

Clarion if you understood the issue with the virus you'd realise the main issue is the Influenza vaccines are futile against it. Also, the COVID-19 has different stages of development and mutation.

It's a sensible precaution if ill . A sniffle or cough doesn't stop you getting on, but anything more you shouldn't want to pass on to others like someonedud to you. That stated, if infectious at the sniffle stage, you may be on a no-win situation anyway. Sensibly, while an epidemic or pandemic is around, one ought to minimise social interaction anyway. The aim is to kill off the virus not the public. Just find a good balance between carrying on and being an ideal citizen.

In the current climate you'd be wise to self-isolate. I was in a restaurant the other day and sneezed - pepper being the culprit. Oh my goodness! Horror of horrors! You could almost see the crosses being whipped out to cries of unclean!!!

Self-isolation isn't about protecting you. It's about protecting other people.

If I was in the categories the WHO are advising then yes, I would take their advice, I am though, over 70 and won’t be staying in because of my age, if it was that I had underlying medical problems that cause a low immune system, then I wouldn’t hesitate to follow advice

Its a moral duty if you have the Corona virus or the flu to keep away from people. People sniffing and sneezing in shops or public transport is disgusting.
ClarionSt: would you be so Gung Ho if you or one of your loved ones was in the high risk category? A spouse, or grandchild?
Millions of people in the high risk category get the Flu vaccination every year, this does not exist for the Corona virus yet.
Its not about self isolation for yourself, its to protect the vulnerable in society by trying to put the brakes on the spread of it.
Enjoy Malta -you may be there for a lot longer than you think lol!

I would certainly self-isolate if I had the faintest symptom but at the moment I'm just avoiding crowded situations as much as possible e.g. nothing would tempt me to go into Oxford by bus right now.

I absolutely would self isolate. The big difference between covid19 and flu is that there is no vaccine, little or no natural immunity if you haven't had it and survived. I am in the middle for vulnerability, am in generally good health but at the older end of the population, but I have got older frailer neighbours and live in a generally local older population. I don't want it and don't want to pass it on. As I currently live alone and don't go out a lot because I have an old unwell dog to care for, self isolation would be no big deal for me.

Er......given that I work in an Operating Theatre where two staff have already self-isolated after we’ve had a confirmed case yesterday I definitely would, but each to their own.

It's up to 9 now, but the real point is that there will be more cases in Malta precisely because people aren't making the decisions they should in order to protect themselves and others.

Covid-19 is also deadlier, as a proportion of those it affects, than the flu. At least 10 times deadlier and perhaps a little more. Don't panic, but maybe don't use that as an excuse to put yourself and others at greater risk.
