Hi Sqad - you may or may not know that I have been having excruciating pain in my knees for nearly 4 weeks now.

I got a prescription yesterday for co-codamol (the strongest you can get from a doctor) and also Naproxen from doctor's too. Chemist said "oh these Naproxen are the real deal)

I am moving a little more but what I can't truly understand for a woman who suffers from chronic insomnia I am sleeping for like hours. Last night about 4 hours on the couch then went onto bed and slept more.

Got up this morning and fell asleep again on couch for maybe 2 hours - this is definitely not me - like I can't believe it.

Anyway can you tell which of the tablets would cause this sleepiness. Don't get me wrong Sqad I'm not complaining but just wondered - thanks for any replies. Thanks

the NHS says Naproxen can make you sleepy

same for co-codamol

So I'll let Sqad sort that out.
I know I am not Sqad, but co-codamol absolutely wipes me out. Same for my husband too.

He is waiting for an op on his knee and is having to take these for pain. Now if he tells me he has taken some, I normally ask "What time do you want waking up then?".
You really need to see a doctor. Insist on a face to face appt.
I don't know how they can just prescribe painkillers when they haven't even seen you.

thanks Jno - with what is happening to me - there is a difference between sleepiness and unconsciousness LOL
Question Author
Barmaid - as you know there are different strengths particularly of the co-codamol - the ones from OTc I might as well buy a box of Smarties but perhaps these ones being prescribed make a difference.

Can't wait until I walk tho - walked on a rollator last Saturday but I was a bit embarrassed but the rollator belonged to my neighbour and she is tiny and so the handles were too low and I didn't want to upset the size so left well alone.

Hopefully all this rest will me do good.
Take you pick JJ.

My money goes on co-codamol

////.I don't know how they can just prescribe painkillers when they haven't even seen you.////

Thats because you don't have a medical qualification.

There are at least half a dozen medical conditions involving the knee . You really need to get a proper diagnosis before taking a load of painkillers. They only mask the condition.
Sqad ____I might not have a medical qualification but have enough common sense to know the correct procedure.

thanks Sqad - I guess it doesn't matter about Take your Pick as long as they help. Not that you will worry about this too much but with being so immobile for 4 weeks have gained my lovely 7 lbs that I had lost- am broken hearted spent a penny but only farted (sorry for being crude) - see the brain is being affected too LOL
andres...jj is in pain and needs painkillers - no matter what the underlying problem that needs sorting out turns out to be.

years ago - I went into doctor (brilliant locum) and asked her for a saw - she said - you wouldn't get a saw here - what do you want it for - to saw my arm off - the pain was so severe.

Then she gave me Gabapentin - truly great painkillers - but you wouldn't get them now. Probably get a saw quicker now lOL
gingejbee---I have never had a knee problem but have lived for almost 70 years with someone who has. Over the years he has had a knife wound, cartilage problem, torn ligaments, dislocated knee cap ,arthritis and finally a full titanium knee replacement on the same knee so I do have some understanding about knee pain.
Co codamol contains codeine which can cause constipation. Increase fibre intake, prune juice and have enough water to drink. You might need a stool softener as well
Jennyjoan, my friend is on morphine patches, orimorph and gabapentin so you can still get the latter.
I'm taking cocodamol, on prescription, and nefopam. Did have a little trouble with constipation but I take 10mls of Lactulose a day which works for me. I don't feel a bit sleepy on the cocodamol.
JJ, don't let yourself become constipated!
You know what happened last time.
Back in January I went through the whole range of pain killers when I had a severe pain in shoulder.
Saw a physio at GP medical centre who told me to do NHS Pilates via YouTube ….he didn’t read my notes.
I ended up on liquid morphine.
I had to see consultant for regular Myeloma 8 weekly checkup (been in remission since April 2018). I told him about the pain and said ‘he would send a strong letter to GP about physio’ and sent me for an MRI scan same week (2 days after seeing him). Got results after 7 days and myeloma consultant said the pain in shoulder was a referral of pain due to a myeloma cancer lump in T3 vertebrae pressing on a nerve.
Basically don’t ignore pains if even the strongest pain killers don’t work.
I had 5 sessions of mild radiotherapy and the lump has more or less gone now. Chemo drugs will remove the remainder.
With myeloma you can get it where it’s a blood cancer , but don’t effect bloods forming a lump instead.
All my bloods have been perfect.

well on another topic about the same thing - it's not getting better - in fact as time marches on - the knee now feels like I have fractured it - that's how immense the pain is.

did think the painkillers would help. I can't ring doctors again as they would say I haven't give it enough time.

so disappointed the pain hasnt eased off after nearly 4 weeks. I'll give it until next Monday and see what happens. as i type - just throbbing and throbbing
Sorry to hear that you're in pain, jenny. I hope you at least get a few hours sleep x

I am just on my way to chemist to pick up new painkillers - doctor spoke to me via his email and has sent me a rub, steroids and something else. Tried to have a shower and getting in and out was tremendous pain - I asked him what he thought he could be - osteoporosis = he said. I do hope these new painkillers work. my knees are swelling up too - the ironic thing they are not sore to touch - just all inside the knees. pain like no other like it.
