I have been advised by a plumber who has installed a water softener to use salt tablets. Unfortunately a replacement bag of salt tablets has been found to have been rather crushed up resulting in a proportion of the bag resembling fine powered salt being put into the softener. Has anyone been in the same situation and has found this has cause an issue or is it more likely the softener will just need refilling up sooner.

The state of the salt will have no effect whatsoever on the operation of the softener. The salt is only in pellets or tablets for the convenience of loading it; the machine will not use any more or any less than if the salt was not crushed.
Weigh a whole one (or check volume). Use the bits up first in the same quantity.
Re-reading your post I think the plumber was just advising you to use tablet salt as opposed to buying table salt in big bags. Tablets or pellets are much easier to use when filling the softener and are more likely to "flow" down the reservoir as the salt is used up.
I have got a water softener and used to use granular salt in it, the proper stuff. It used to form a crust around the water reservoir and also around the drum where the filter material is. The bloke who installed suggested that I switch to tablets as they don't make crusts in the same way. he said to use up the granular stuff I had left, I could add it in to the new tablets, about a quarter at a time by volume.

It's essential to maintain your water softener properly for optimal performance. While I can't provide specific advice on crushed salt tablets, it's possible that using them might result in your softener needing more frequent refills.
