Benefits Available For Dementia Sufferers

Where can I find this info please? I'm asking on behalf of a friend who's wife has very severe vascular dementia and I'm sure they would be eligible. She's a very dear school friend and have struggled financially for a long time. Her husband says they get basic rate attendance allowance.

You can apply to your local council for consideration for a reduction in Council Tax.

They may be entitled to a Blue Badge for parking as dementia is an accepted illness to qualify.  Many local authorities charge for parking but often the time paid for is doubled or extended.

Probably qualify for higher rate now,  if they are just on state pension\pension credit might be worth speaking to Age UK benefits adviser. Possibly eligible for severe disability benefit.  Also depending on who they have worked for they may be eligible for a one off grant from occupational benevolent funds (Turn2us website is easy to use)

Not that great news I'm afraid as most of it is benefits​​​​​​​ as​​​​​​​s​​​​​​​es​​​sed. Is​​​​​​​ she at home or in care...?

Attendance allowance is one area - on top of the pension.

Next one would be local council relief as to rates and then financial support if they are renting.

Then the NHS - if she is in a home but their contribution is pretty limited as to the overall costs of the home and upkeep until 'end of life' and, no pun intended, this upper level is very limited term-wise. It also involves an extensive interview of nigh on 90 minutes with them and the home.....

It isn't all doom and gloom.  After advising a friend of mine to apply, she received Attendance Allowance at the highest level and through applying to the Council Tax department and filling in the necessary form, supported with a letter from her Gp she got a council tax reduction and backpay.  If you don't ask, you don't get.  I hope your friend gets the financial and physical help she deserves.
