Hip surgery

Hi all,
My youngest son(27) had a really bad accident at work 3 years ago, resulting in a broken back and broken hip joint,the ball snapped off, he was mended and put back together, however he has just had an MRI scan and he now needs hip replacement surgery, do any of you know anybpdy young that has had this done and if so how it worked out, cheers all, Ray

hip replacements are so common now. I know people that have had them done and they are getting on with life now. You are only in hospital a matter of days now and they have you up and walking in no time.

thanks electric and gilby, it just worries me at his age, how long do they last etc, it will be done privately (firms insurance paying ) so he won't have to wait, he just wants to get his life back 3 years no work, it happened a month before he and his brother were going round the world, Sods law eh !!!

My sister had an accident that has resulted in her needing a new hip. They have nursed her along for the last few years to delay her first surgery as at the moment life expectancy for her type of replacement is fifteen years max. In theory she would be able to have the surgey repeated another two times by which time she could be eighty. One of the other girls from the clinics she was attending had it done a couple of summers ago and is now thrilled she had it done. My sister is due her surgery imminently.

hope your sis is ok, when is she "being done"?

he knew he might need it,the blood flow isn't right so bone is crumbling,they told him he could need 3 ops during his life, luckily they will all be done privately,so not much waiting, as the company will all ways have to fund it,, thanks again that news helps, as withall accidents though they should not happen, he had a trench collapse on him,

It's all a gamble ray. I need a new hip but am to young ..at 58..!!.Plus it's only arthritis which I can cope with until it gets too bad. They only have a certain lifespan so to speak .Ten to fifteen years. In a younger person the prognosis is probably better and with your sons' medical history it would be better for him even if he does have to have it replaced in the distant future.As a young man he will be up and about in no time and have a new lease of life and good luck to him.

A friend of mine had her first hip replacement at 26 due to a genetic condition and had her second at 39 - she is now 53 and will be having another within the next year or so.

There should be no problems with your sone having a hip replacement - but do be aware that they don't last for ever and may need to be replaced again in around 10-15 years time.

It is better for him to have it done now while he is still young enough to enjoy it rather than endure more years of pain (potentially) by putting it off!

My dad is currently waiting for a knee replacement but is putting it off for as long as he can - he is 52 now but wants to wait until he is closer to retirement age as due to the nature of his work, he wouldn't be able to continue in the same feild and feels he is too old to retrain for a new career.

Hope your son is well and makes a speedy recovery from the op.

Just to add - the recovery time for a hip replacement is now faster than ever.

He will have total bed rest for approx 1 week - then he will be given a course of exercises to do by a physio - after that he will be encouraged to go for short walks to build up the mobility of the joint,

All in he will probably be back to full mobility within approx 6-8 weeks.

poor you ray, and your poor son. I'm so sorry to hear about such a terrible accident.

the only experience i have of hip replacements is my granny who had one just before she retired at age 61. She died at age 87 and her new hip was the only bit of her which worked and didnt give her any gyp.

I'm sure it will be fine, it might just be that he has to go easy. Also, the key to a full recovery at any age is to make sure you don't push things. If the doc says stay off it for 6 weeks, then stay off the darn thing. Don't think, 'oh, i'm feeling better now, I'm sure itll be ok.' Just because the pain has improved, it doesn't mean that the joint has completely healed.

I hope he is able to take it easy and is being compensated adequately for this accident in the work place.

hi ray! my husbands gran had her hip replaced. i know she isn't a young person but she was in and out of hospital quick and recovered well. i'm sure your son will be fine. i wish him, u and the rest of your family all the best xXx

My brother has alway's had brittle'ish bones, when he was 14 he had to have both hip's pinned, the pins stayed for a few years, then removed. He is now 32, and been told he needs both hips replacing, He reckon's anything to relieve the pain. best wishes.x

My ex was in a serious car smash. He ended up needing a hip replacement 6 months later due to blood vessel damage after multiple fractures in his femur.. That was about 9 years ago and he is still doing fine. He is now 32.

I do know a guy who had it done when he was 18. He is in his mid thirties now, and is into caving, rock climbing and diving and has also been on polar expeditions. He did say though he felt the cold there more than anywhere else on his body.
I also met a girl who was having it done in hospital, and she seemed fine but I was out 5 days after she had it done.
I wish him the best though, if he is half as sweet as you RAy Ill come play nurse xx

i am 32 and i'm here so often nowadays because i'm recovering from a hip replacement that i had done 7 weeks ago. For me, the surgery was fantastic - the longstanding pain immediately disappeared, and my mobility has improved immensly already. The operation pain went in a few days and was controlled well by morphine. I know i face another operation in a certain amount of years, but 15 years isnt the absolute maximum... with younger people they dont cememnt the hip in place so they can last longer (the degrading cement is usually the reason for needing to replace the replace ment. btw i would like to disagree with the "total bed rest for a week" comment.

I had mine done on a wednesday and was up and around on a frame on the friday and home on the monday doing stairs etc (with 2 sticks)

Thanks all, great hearing from you,and thanks for your kind words, I just wish it could have been me, he was only 24, god job he was a very fit and strong lad, he was buried in a trench with 2 ton of clay on top of him, makes me go cold, the phone call all parents dread, thanks caz, my e-mail is [email protected] Rich is away for a few days,staying with his brother, I am sure he would like that,you are neare his age to, why did you have yours done?
