Daddy-long-legs

On page 13 of today's Daily Telegraph (Sept 20), there is an article "hot weather breeding boom brings invasion of the daddy long-legs".

The picture is one of crane flies and the article is about crane flies. I thought that a daddy long-legs was a harvestman. The harvestman is an arachnid with 8 long legs and no wings. The crane fly is an insect with 6 long legs and 2 wings.

They can't both be daddy long-legs, can they?

Yes, they do both get called by the same name. Personally I always called the craneflies 'daddy long legs' and the spiders were 'jenny long legs'

P.S. Shouldn't this be in 'Animals and Nature'?

Yes .Both the harvestman and the crane fly are known in various parts of the country by the nick name of "daddy-long -legs"

You're right Gen2, I should have put this into "Animals and nature". If this thread can be moved across, it should be. I thought later on that I had asked my question in the wrong place.
