Dogs can sense odors at concentrations nearly 100 million times lower than humans can apparently! so why is it when you can smell dog poo 100 yards away, your dog has to stick his nose in it to smell it?

Hi, maybe to appreciate the more delicate depths of the bouquet?

Hi RATTER, I know just what you mean, they do get dangerously close!
I think divegirl hit the nail on the head, I think its not so much a case of smelling but processing all kinds of information about the depositor
Possibly because there's a lot more 'information' to be gleaned from a close-up sniff. Maybe some of the important chemicals dissipate / disintegrate too much after a short distance from the poo.

I wish I hadn't asked this now!!
The whole thought of it is grossing me out, I'm so glad dogs cant fly and I never want to come back as a dog.
But if you did come back as a dog, that would be one of the benefits - dog poo wouldn't be foul and disgusting to you; it'd be a wonderful source of information about the other dogs in the area.

Just imagine if women were in the habit of leaving their knickers everywhere they went...ok, I'll stop now.
Good question. My dog used to find it too good to pass by and she would eat it. Grosssssssss.

THANK YOU ALL FOR PARTICIPATING.

You lot are gross!!!!
why ty you Ratter....lol
Do you remember a TV programme where people were asked to nominate things they could do such as recognise cars just by their lights, or by the sound of the door shutting?

I reckon I could go on there and tell you what a dog had eaten by the colour/consistency of its poo!

Having had dogs for ***** number of years and had boarding kennels, and always been the one responsible for picking up at the end of dog shows, I have become an expert in the art of recognising all manner of poo.

After all its only re-cycled dog food! (And it only becomes dog food when you feed it to a dog!).
