Alone at the gym
11 Answers
This may sound really silly but i want to lose a bit of weight and get fit but i don't have the motivation to work out at home. If i'm paying for gym membership i'm more likely to go, however, my problem is that nobody wants to join the gym with me. I'm really nervous about going on my own as i am quite self conscious. I know im not massive, i'm 5 foot 4 and weigh 91/2 stone but i feel big. Any tips?

If you go to a good gym, you will find that they will insist on you having an induction, where one of the instructors will have a chat with you about what you want to achieve, and show you haw to use all of the equipment properly, and usually will design a workout for you.
Its much less daunting once youve done that, cos first off you will get to know the instructor, and youll know exactly what youre doing.
I think the only places where they make you feel uncomfortable, are the really posh places, where the girls all have leotards up there bums!
Give it a try, you'll be suprised how nice they are X

I love the gym, I often go on my own, I use 3 different places.
I have my ipod, spend a good 20 minutes deciding what is going to be my notivational playlist and I go down and jump on my best buddy the cross trainer for the majority of my session. I was a little nervous to begin with so picked quiet times, I go early morning mainly and love it, its pretty dead so the instructors are generally there to help you out. I even started going to classes. Although i never look in the mirror, uurrgh!! So why do they always put the tread mills facing them?

As others have said, take your music with you, it'll keep you occupied and you won't feel too self-conscious. I used to go by myself for aerobics/pilates which could be an another option if you want to be in a group as its much less monotonous/routine than using machines and just as much of (if not more) an energy boost.
I've stopped going now and instead go jogging on alternate mornings, personally I find it much more enjoyable being outdoors and I can go whenever I feel like it, not like at the gym where you'd probably have to figure out going during the least busy time. Its up to you whatever you feel comfortable with, but if you're not a regular and still feel awkward, my advice is to join aerobics classes to start off....

I used to go with my mates then they stopped going and I stopped going. I want to start going again on my own.
Seriously though, going by yourself shows pure confidence and independence.
If you go by yourself, just look around... You will see nobody even cares that your by yourself.
This is a bit off topic but I know lots of pick-up artists like to go out alone to create a bigger social circle and meet women, imagine how much confidence is needed to do that.
Back on topic - If I was you I would go by myself, gives you time to think and relax.
