Nits and Vinegar!

Hi everyone. I was reading through some previous threads where a number of people swear that the best way to get rid of nits is by using vinegar. My 4 year old has nits at the mo (nice!) and we used Lyclear on her on Monday. Obviously I need to repeat the treatment in a few days but was thinking of the vinegar method instead. Can anyone tell me: do i need to wait the 7-10days before trying this method or should i just do it asap? Do i put the vinegar on before shampooing her hair or after? How long to I leave it on? Also, do i still need to repeat this every 7-10days? Sorry to sound a bit dim but this is my first outbreak and I want to contain it asap! Thanks in advance x

I smothered vinegar all over my son's hair, left him smelling like a delicious chip for 24 hours, shampooed, conditioned and combed and he was lice free, just keep conditioning and combing as that gets rid of eggs!

You need to make sure that you have got rid of all the eggs as these will hatch and then it will all start again. I used conditioner on my daughter. That got rid of the nits but I used to go through her hair and once i found an egg - they are about half an inch from the root of the hair and pull them up the hair shaft with the forefinger and thumb. They are glued to the hair so they dont come off easy. It may take some time the first time. But I used to check everyday to make sure they didnt come back. Hope this helps!

Loads of conditioner (cheap basics stuff is fine) and nit comb gets rid of them, However my 14yr old (yes 14yr old) son had them recently and we used No Marks 10 minutes treatment from Boots it was expensive but it was oil based, no smell and worked first time 100%.

I'm not going to tell you how to get rid of them, you'll get plenty of people, on and off of here giving you advice, but what you need when she's clear, is a deterrent, I can't remember the name, but a chemists assistant will know, Its a Coconut spray, if the little darlings try to invade agin, they can't get a grip and fall off, believe me, it works.

Thanks everyone. We combed her through again last night and there was only a few eggs and one live beast. We will keep combing and combing and I am away to the chemist now to stock up on potions and coconut spray!

hi, hope you are still open to advice.... i read that if you put mayonnaise on your hair and wrap the hair in a plastic bag, this breaks down the exoskelton of the lice and they die and are unable to lay more eggs. this should be followed up with the vinegar treatment, which is supposed to break down the glue that sticks the nit to the hair shaft, making them very easy to comb out.
