Don't panic. There is a blood test that your friend can have to find out if they are infected. This test detects the presence of antibodies to the virus, (which would mean that your friend had been in contact with it.) It usually takes people 12-14 weeks after being exposed to the virus to develop the antibodies. Therefore if you have unprotected sex and want to be tested the next day or week, you will be advised to wait for at least three months after your high risk activity.

It is very important during the waiting period that your friend abstains from participating in high risk activities so as to prevent passing on any potential H.I.V. transmission.

They can speak to a doctor about their concerns. It usually takes about two weeks for blood test results to come back.

HIV is diagnosed with a blood test (hence the term HIV positive). However, the test used in most UK hospitals will only show the presence of the virus once it has become established (three months or so after infection).

Some areas do a test for a protein on the surface of the virus which will be positive after 2 weeks if the virus has been contracted otherwise as said it is 3 months for a test for the antibodies. It isn't a very easy virus to catch however. The only way your friend will know is to have a test - she needs to go to the nearest GU clinic unless her GP will do the test. Agree with Octavius about avoidance of sex until proved negative.

it takes years sometimes for any signs to show. all three other posts are correct to an extent. abstinance is key here. there is a test that will detect proteins of HIV within i think 48-72 hours of exposure. this test is VERY expensive, and not normally covered by insurance. the other test does test for antibodies. it would be good to get tested now, but HIV can lay dormant in the body for 6 months before anything could show. its always recommended if you have more than 1 partner in a year to get tested every 6 months for that reason.
