As far as I understand it, there's very few examples where a live donation would be performed outside of immediate family and friends. Sometimes, where a family member is willing to give a transplant but is not a tissue match, it can be possible to do a swap with another donor.

And as for ethnic background, donors from the same ethnic background are generally closer matches, so normally you would donate within your own ethnic group anyway.

After I'm dead they may have what they please for whom they please, and indeed, if you're registered on the register

Surely if you have been identified as having a great match, one could presume that this would be to a particular person. You wouldn�t get to choose who had your organ, since that person has already been identified. The question should be, would you give it to that person and that can only really be decided once the situation has arisen.

Generally though, providing that person was someone whom I viewed (if able to) would greatly benefit from longevity of life etc, and not abuse the �gift� (George Best springs to mind) then I would have no hesitation to donate regardless of age sex race religion etc.

I would echo Octavius' view. More practically, trying to impose donor restrictions on the nature of the recipient would be difficult to say the least.

First they'd have to prove that at no time in the future would I need that second kidney ... until then, they're staying as a matching pair.

i think it would have to be someone i care about, friend or family - and at a push, a child or a really worthy person

the things you listed - i have no prejudices to any of them so they wouldn't be a factor - except perhaps lifestyle - if i thought they would abuse the privelige - like george best did - then no i wouldn't do it.

but i don't think i would just randomly donate to an unknown stranger.

even if your other kidney was fine now - it could go wrong in the future and also any sort of operation involves many risks, so for me it would be very circumstantial.

i think its very noble of everyone to instantly and unconditionally say yes...on here....hypothetically...never going to happen - thats easy - but unfortunately i don't really believe it.

perhaps if it was discovered that i had 3 kidneys, i may be more inclined to risk surgery.

joko, a very interesting point re the eyes for donation after death i know quite a few people who did not agree to retinal donation but were willing to give any other organs , very strange.
