MRI scan rights?

I had an MRI scan on the NHS last month and have since decided to go private as I will have to wait months to see a consultant on the NHS. The private Doctor wants to see the scan pictures that the hospital took but they are refusing to let me have them. Do I have any right to these scans or are they the hospitals property? An MRI Scan costs approximately �950.00, may be different according to areas, but not much, so the NHS has spent close to a thousand on you, so you can understand why they won't let you have the results for private treatment, but having said that, which NHS hospital does your Consultant work in, when he;s not doing private, maybe if he asked, they might oblige, as a favour to him.

Being completely honest I'm not entirely sure on your rigts as such. But as far as I'm aware as a patient you can request copies of any of your notes, diagnostic test reports and therefore presumably also scans or radiographs.
I find it quite unusual that the trust won't allow your consultant access after all he/she will also be an NHS employee (so much of a consultants work has to be within the NHS).
You may have to pay a duplication fee, but I'm fairly sure they cannot deny you access to the scan or the report.
Its serves no purpose for them with hold it.

Hi im a medical secretary in a very busy NHS surgery. Firstly you have every right to obtain your MRI results from your GP. Call the secretaries at your surgery, who will ask permission from your doctor if you can have a copy. Because this is for your own wellbeing there is no reason why they should not give you a copy. If they refuse speak to the practice manager. If she/he refuses call your PCT you can get the number from your surgery. Failing this call PALS this is the patient liason service and tell them. Why did you pay 920-00 for a MRI. I dont know what area you live in but every NHS hospital have a service called 'paying patients'. Its the same as private treatment but in a NHS hospital. My daughter had to have a abdominal scan which on the NHS was a 26 week wait. I obtained a quote from various private hospitals which ranged from 800-00 to 1000-00. I called paying patients at my local hospital who quoted me 160-00 and she had an appt the following week. I must admit not a lot of people know about paying patients, but your surgery should have advised you of this. Insist on your MRI results, they are yours. Hope this helps. Janex
