Tummy pains during pregnancy
9 Answers
I am 9 weeks pregnant but I keep getting pains in my tummy that go round to my lower back. They are not really bad pains they just feel a bit uncomfortable. They come and go and when I lay down they go. I havent had any bleeding or anything like that but I am worried if this is normal or not?? I did have light spotting on the day I was due on aswell but nothing since and that was like 4/5 weeks ago now. I had a misscarraige last year so as you can imagine I am worried that this may happen again. I didnt have any bleeding before except for some brown runny discharge and when I went for my 12 week scan there wasnt a heart beat. If the pains were something serious do you think I would have other symptoms like bleeding etc??

So to be honest, I think that what you are explaining are normal as we all get pains, but obviously you really should tell your midwife or you could call NHS direct for advice 0845 46 47, but I think they will tell you to speak to your midwife, mostly to rest your mind!
Take care honey x x x

Hi lexy, I am 14 weeks and had very similar pains to you. I had no bleeding at all but minor discomfort with pains similar to that of period pains in lower abdomen and back. I called the midwife and she said its to be expected and sounds very normal. I have also experienced discharge which is a clear discharge and I am told that is also normal. She explained that there is so much going on down there that it will cause all sorts of strange twinges and aches. I am sorry to hear about your first misscarriage. My friend who is now 22 weeks pregnant had quite heavy bleeding up until 12 weeks. Is your discharge clear or brown in colour?
I saw the midwife last week for my booking in appointment and I told her then. She said this was normal but because I had a misscarraige last year I dont want to take any chances. The discharge is clear I think, its normal to what ive always got before pregnancy. Im seeing my doctor tomorrow anyway as my midwife said I needed to see him who will make an appointment for me to go for an eary scan, just to put my mind at rest. Im just worried cos when I had a misscarraige last year I didnt have any pain just this brown runny discharge. i dont have that this time but I know that sometimes you dont even know there is a problem. My friend went for her 12 week scan a couple of weeks ago and found out the baby had died a couple of weeks prior but was still there. She didnt have any symptoms at all.
When I had my daughter 5 years ago I didnt have any complications at all, no sickness no pains nothing so anything now i just worry about.

Pains in pregnancy are most often caused by the 'loosening up' of the ligaments in preparation for birth.. This is a normal occurence, and happens during the first few months.
I sympathise - a miscarriage makes the next pregnancy such an anxious time, especially in the first few months. Good luck - I am sure you will be OK.

I was petrified that my first scan would show that I had misscarried, people on here were extremly helpful and gave me some great reassuring advice. The misscarriage your friend had is called a missed misscarriage which is also what my friend had the first time, there are usually no symptoms at all other than a reduction in pregnancy symptoms (however, I was extremley sick from week 6-9 and then it literally stopped completely so I wouldn't agree with that). Out of all misscarriages, missed misscarriages account for 4% which is very small. How have your other prgnancy symptoms been? They say that particularly with morning sickness, the worse you feel, the lesser the chances of misscarriage. It's good that you are going for an early scan as it will definately put your mind at rest. Good luck lexy and please let us know how you get on xx
Lexy - my pains don't worry me that much as i am fortunate to have a midwife living next door to me and I mention things to her occasionally and she says that it's the 'joys of pregnancy'.
I know some who get period pains at the same time every month when they are peregnant. Things will be different when you start to feel the baby kick at around 16 weeks ish as these will be reassuring for you. I know I can't wait for that as I fidn it hard not knowing whats going on in there!
Keep positive honey and you and me will have big bumps soon and will be on here moaning about our ailments! ; - )

I am just gone 6 weeks pregnant and expericencing exactly the same thing. My son is nearly 3 and I remember this from before but it still doesn't stop me worrying. The worst thing is, is that I associate period pains with beeding so everytime I go to the toilet I half expect there to be blood. I have spoke to a midwife who said that it sounds as though it is normal but to obviously look out for prolonged sharper pains etc. It sounds awful and although I wouldn't wish this worry on anyone else, I am glad that I am not the only one!!
I am 6 weeks prg and am having terrible period like pains, mainly when I sit down for long periods or am in bed. No bleeding so feel quite reassured there. The pain is a dull like ache, similar to a period pain travelling round to my lower back. This site has made me feel so much better as I thought I may be miscarrying.
