I think you are looking at it the wrong way. A novice should use a range of equipment at a rate he or she feels comfortable - the aim is to get used to exercise without causing injury.
When you know what you are capable of, you can set realistic, achievable targets - to increase the intensity of the exercise and the time.
Trust me - any amount of exercise will be beneficial, if you have not been exercising.
Enjoy finding your limits and capabilities. You should be sweaty but still able to talk during exercise.
As you progress, invest in a heart rate monitor.
Don't forget the resistance exercises - use the weights AFTER the cardiac exercise for maximum benefit. Don't go mad - light weights, low reps to start.

This really will depend on your weight, the heavier you are the more you will burn. When I started to lose weight I would do my set run, in which I would burn 1100 calories now over 3 stone lighter I hardly hit 600.
The amount of calories you need to burn will depend on your goal, I guess you aim is weightloss of a certain amount? If so it will depend on the amount of calories you eat in a day. The average woman should eat about 1600 mainly as a lot are highly sedentary, therefore by eating 1600 calories you will not lose or gain any weight, by exercising a buring say 500 calories you will creat a deficit which will cause you to lose weight.
Hope that helps
