wisdom tooth extraction

Hi there Im due to go in to get 2 widsom teeth extracted on wednesday as they are impacted. I already am petrofied of dentists, so i was given some diazepam however does anybody know how long it takes? Ive been booked in for 1 hour, but i dont know if i could take the entire hour of them taking 2 out - one of which has 2 roots on it. They also spoke about cutting the gum and bone and its just knocked me completly. Not helping my asthma what so ever. I dont know much about it really. Both teeth are still under the gum - not much is above the gunline. Thanks

If you have these concerns you ought to go back and discuss the procedure with your dentist. They are in the best position to advise you as to the actual procedure, and they will also have the benefit of having radiographs available. They will be able to let you know the likely time that will be taken, and if you are 'up to' having both removed at once. Although the appointment is for an hour, not all of this time is for the procedure itself. It will include getting you comfortable, answering any questions, local anaesthetic etc. Some wisdom teeth are extracted very easily and there are many factors that influence the time taken (type of impaction, depth of impaction, surrounding bone levels, age, access to the area, root shape and size etc)
Most lower wisdom teeth will have 2 roots and so this is quite normal.
I reall would discuss this with your dentist. Hopefully a quick phone call will put your mind at rest.

If you have taken the diazepam, you won;t be too concerned what they are doing - it's a wonderful drug, the more stressed you get, the more relaxed it makes you feel.

What dosage do you have?

ive got a few 5mg diaz. was thinking one at night to help sleep, one in morning (6am i wake up at) and one just before i leave the house. im completly phobic of dentists.

they dont knock you out if they can help it as its less dangerous they said (im astmatic)

ive already talked with my dentst about it but its last minute nerves as i go in on wednesday morning.

When I had mine out I requested that I was put to sleep, they tried to discourage me but I just couldnt have gone through with it awake....One of my wisdoms was only slightly exposed, and when I went down to the theatre, the man looked at my x rays and said easy peesy! Much to my relief...It was all over with quite quickly, but seriously though if you feel that bad about it, I would go and have a chat with the dentist about other options you can have, ie, being knocked out, if your that afraid, tell them what you want and stick to your guns, at the end of the day, they are working for you!

Bless, ILNY - I understand your concerns. I'm petrified of going to the dentist as well, and always have intravenous sedation. However, maybe this'll help you to feel better. I had to go to hospital to have one of my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago. It was only partialy exposed above the gum, and I was in total fear. I was given a shot of something to calm me down, and the tooth was taken out before I realised it. The entire procedure, which was totally painless, took less than 5 seconds. I nearly fainted with shock to realise that it was all over so quickly - so best of luck.

J9PUR has answered accurately and appropriately.
No 'they' do not routinely 'knock people out' for 'wisdom' tooth removal, although sometimes this procedure is carried out under GA according to a number of factors which J9PUR alluded to in her answer.
Although GA in otherwise healthly people is generally 'safe' there is alwalys a small risk of death and therefore it simply isn't justifiable to routinely give someone a GA 'cos they don't like the dentist'.

Well im back from there. It wasnt as bad as i imagined but it wasnt as rosey either.

He numbed up the area, with 2 loads in each side, but the top i still felt the pokey thing so put navacon or summit there too. Split the bottom tooth in half and pulled it out after cuttin gum a bit.

Still have taste o blood in ma mouth, and was told not to rince out :( - hate it.

Pleased i didnt get "knocked out" though, but wish i didnt have impacted teeth all together.

Just dont know bout food or drink now.
