Over the past year, and more obviously over the last few months, I have been losing hair. It comes out alot when I wash my hair, in my hands, then the plug hole always needs clearing after. Then when I brush my hair afterwards, more comes out. Even my hairdresser has noticed, but can't offer any ideas - she is only young. I don't feel unwell in myself. My hair is long & curly, so it doesn't actually show yet, but am afraid it might, if it continues. I am 40. Does anyone know a simple reason for this or do you think there maybe an underlying problem?

Hair loss in women is usually caused by a medical condition - it can be thyroid related.

Get along to your GP who will isolate the cause and get treatment going, before the problem becomes noticable.

Don't be embrassed - this is more common than you think.
It can also be stress-related.
also could be the menopause starting my hairdresser also told me could be lack of iron
I had this a few years ago and it was due to having a stupid-low iron count. my nails were also breaking all the time. I had iron tablets but also took Sea Kelp and I think it really made a difference. you can buy sea kelp from health food shops. I recommended it to a woman at work who had very thin hair, and she was really delighted with her hair growth.

my hair has made a full recovery, and is also long and curly, although I had quite a few inches off as the new growth was fuller and healthier.

Thanks for all the advice above. I reckon I obviously need to get checked out by the GP and hope that it is something straight forward.
I won't put it off any longer.
Many thanks for your help.
If you haven't gone to your GP as yet,ask about SLE(systemic lupus erythematous) as well.
