Fungal toenail infection

Any ideas how to get rid of, Doc has given tablets to take for 6 months but now trying for baby and so cannot take. Are these paint on treatments effective? They are v. expensive! Had for about 18 months and really need to get rid of before toenail or worse toe falls off!!
