Having all your teeth extracted ....

Has anyone had all their teeth out? I am taking my brother to hospital tomorrow morning, to have all his teeth out, and I wonder if I will be at the hospital with him all day ... obviously complications could happen ??? but assuming all goes well, anyone any idea how long it will be before he is discharged?

My mother had it done at the dentist 40 odd years ago - top and bottom, the whole lot.

She came home on the back of dad's motorbike.

my dad (medic student) had all his teeth out in early training, age 20s.....he swore by it. He never had dental probs or exes. could eat anything very rarely got ulcers (only if he couldn't rinse cleanser, during transits).

How old is ur bruv Mrs Chappie.....if his teeth are wobbley 'tis easy to remove.

My bro is 49, I couldn't believe how quickly it all happened. He went down at 8.10 in the morning, and by 10 o'clock he'd had 'em all out and we were back with him in his flat!

That was last Saturday, and for the whole day he seemed on a high (the effects of the anaesthetic) but then yesterday he said his mouth was extremely painful, and he was very down. I'm not surprised, as he needed several stitches where they'd cut deep into his gums ....... ewwwwww ....... He was very brave, even the thought of it was making me feel queasy, and it wasn't even me going through it!

Hope everything goes OK chappie - it should do. On my last dental visit, a guy walked out after having all his teeth removed, and he'd had sedation as well, so hopefully, your brother should be able to go home pretty quickly. x

Thanks Ice. He's already had 'em out - less than two hours from going into theatre to getting back home!

He needed it done at the hospital, 'cos his gums (as well as his teeth) were in such a bad state. The surgeon came out to speak to us straight after the op and said he'd cut away more of the gum than he anticipated he'd need to.

Makes me feel yukky just thinking about it. But it needed to be done, and hopefully, once the gums have healed, he'll have no more problems with his mouth.

Well iItell you something chappie, your brother's a lot braver than I am. I have a phobia about going to the dentist's, and only hope that my teeth stay in good shape like they are now., because it's barbaric!!! Lol. x

people used to do that on their 21st birthdays, my father included. My own teeth are in poor shape but capped and usable. jno jnr has never been to a dentist. A generational story. Having them all out is pretty rare today, thanks to dentistry advances, but I guess there are still odd occasions

Probably more common that you think, jno. If a person doesn't take care of their teeth, the resulting decay may necessitate all the teeth coming out, or perhaps if they have a gum disease which also necessitates it in order to stop the infection spreading. Many people can't even get onto a denist's books these days, unless they go privately - so i think we're going to see more poor oral hygiene than ever before.

Jno, unfortunately my bro had badly neglected his teeth, and they were rotting away, along with his gums. They were in a dreadful state.

He had been waiting months to get them out, hardly able to eat because they were so bad. At one point the dentist was talking about saving a couple of teeth, then he changed his mind and said that they might as well all come out.

maybe you're right, Icemaiden, though my dentist says he's never done it. He's advertising for more NHS patients too!
