ulenoyds (spelling) dangly things in throat

Wonder if anyone has had these dangly bits at the back of the thraot removed, or knows anyone who has? I am due to go in to get mine taken out due to snoaring lol, and am a little apprehensive about the after effect / length of operation etc.....

I doubt very much that they would just remove your uvula (dangly bit) for snoring. This was performed many years ago, but found to be inadequate. The operation offerd noe is a tonsil removal, uvula removal and a small part of tjhe soft palate. You would be in hospital for about 2 days and initially is quite "uncomfortable" It may well be that your surgeon will do the opertion with a laser and this coul be done as a day cas and recovery is quicker. Do you know which method your surgeon intends to pursue?

I've had it done - with quite a lot of my soft palate taken as well as my tonsils.

It is pretty sore for a week or so - oddly enough in the ears more than anywhere else.

The result is, I can swallow horse pills because they don;t touch the sides, and I have to be careful because food and liquid are more prone to 'slip down the wrong way', but you get used to that surprisingly quickly.

Hopefully it will sort your snoring - I had mine done for aponea which included snoring as well.

To sum up, it's unpleasant surgery, but the effects wear off fairly quiickly.

My advice - get a large box of soluble Solpadene, and take them every two hours to keep the pain-killing on a constant level. Have them with a glass of water my your bed, and when you wake in the night - and you will - have them straight away.

roosi, now competely confused.....so it is your adenoids that you are aving removed. How old are you as removal in the adult is unusual. Seems now you had better vfollow the advice ofdaffy654.

The dangly bit that after tonsils out is still there, they ratlle when I breathe lying down, so I snore basically. Doc offered to get me referred to get them taken out/off....

I think it's done by laser.

That makes moree sense...proceedure is called laser uvulectomy can be done under local anaesthesia and is done almost as an out patient proceedure and is basically painless. Don,t worry.

Hi there I had my uvula shortened on Oct 2nd. I had a general anaesthetic(sp) I was taken down for surgery at 4.20 & was back on the ward by 4.50 I had to fast from 7.00am so my first thought was food lol had to wait an hour but that was just for the general to wear off. I was a bit tender for a couple of days but the hospital gave me some fantastic mouthwash which totally numbed my throat. Other than that the only probs were that I couldn't shout ( kids loved it lol) & couldn't drink hot drinks. The reason I had it done was because mine was way too long which caused me to snore & also I stop breathing in my sleep.

The ENT specialist spoke to me about the procedure which Andy explained but warned me he would only advice that if the snoring was a real issue. Also I'd be surprised if it is your adenoids that are being removed unless some tests have already been done because they are meant to shrink during childhood. During a MRI scan I was discovered to have a 'fleshy growth' in the area where adenoids would be so they took a biopsy at the same time as my op which I'm waiting the results for.
