Atkins is based on cutting down on Carbohydrates drastically, so in the first few weeks you cannot eat many Carbs. So no bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, milk, most vegetables and fruit, confectionary etc.
You can, however, eat as much Protein and fat as you like. So any kind of meat, eggs, cream, oils. I think the reason you lose weight rapidly, is purely because you are halving your daily calorific intake. Carbs tend to be quite high in calories.
You'd be better off just eating a healthy, balance diet and exercising regularly. You also have to consider if consuming so much protein and fat will affect your general health.

You know what they always say about things that seem too good to be true !!!
Don't listen to Atkins ... listen to Velvetee. Eat a balance diet, reduce the amount you eat a bit (but NOT drastically), and take lots of exercise.
The more exercise you take, the more you can kick start your metabolism ... then you will just burn up everything you eat.

You can actually eat most veg, and you're limited to the dairy/fat intake. Read the book completely before starting, don't listen to condensed versions, there's so much more to it than that. I lost 4 stone in just over a year with very little effort, no bad breath or bowel issues either. Only the first stage is strict, you stay on that for a min of 2 weeks but can safely stay there for a few months, introducing new things back like berries etc each week and seeing if that affects your weight loss, if it doesn't then great, if it does then avoid it until you reach your goal. Gentle exercise to being with then build up your regime as you lose more weight and lighten the load.
Good luck which ever method you choose, just read up on whatever diet you choose thoroughly for yourself and don't go with 2nd hand advice when it comes to your health

Atkins works! I was on it for about 2 months and regularly lost 3lbs every week. The weight loss seems to be fairly static but after exercising the weight came off and stayed off. If you exercise only to remove weight it comes back on during the following days but with Atkins is doesn't. The weight loss encourages you to stick with the diet. The biggest problem may be with constipation. Keep strictly away from carbohydrates such as biscuits bread and cakes and just eat fatty foods including milk, cheese and eggs and fried bacon. Then at the end of your dieting just eat carbohydrates in moderation to stabilise your weight.
I'v been on golower for 7 weeks and lost 1.5 stone. It's along same lines as Atkins but supposed to be quite healthy. It's not cheap, but it's really easy, no weighing foods and no fuss. I've always advocated reducing calories and exercising, but I wanted some fast results and I'm pleased with them. Way of life hopefully-I don't want to go back to high carb diet and feeling crap. Have a look at website if interested: www.golower.co.uk
I was convinced I'd been suckered in before I started the plan and got results. Saw it in a Sunday mag and in a moment of madness paid up!

2) Eat! Don't starve your self. It is a proven fact that when you don't eat your body goes into starvation mode. When that happens your body will store most of what you eat as fat. You should eat 5-6 times a day. Small meals. I lost close to 40 pounds this way 3 years ago. I am still in my 120's and have not had to fight to keep it that way.

the trick is to cut out carbs COMPLETELY for minimum of 2 weeks...not just cutting down...
i did this quite by chance because i was getting IBS and thought it may be because of that...i lost a stone an a half in about 2 months....that was over a year ago, and i can now eat pretty much anything i want...and i havent put a single pound back on...
many people misunderstand the atkins as a lifestyle change and therefore dont bother because they cant cut out pizza bread, chips etc...but really you only have to do it for about 2-3 weeks ...
