Is your course very female dominated?
As for what to do just try and rise above the bitchiness, don't get involved and find some friends that you get along with, if they start being mean about other people and it makes you feel uncomfortable just don't join in, don't sacrifice your values to be part of a group.

Maybe what you experiencing is a first dose of what most of the world is like most of the time. There is no law that says you must be pleasant to people. While it is better all round if people are, the plain fact is that there are many who aren't and indeed there are plenty of people who enjoy being foul, either openly or secretively.
At least you have been able to ascertain these people are foul, which may mean they are open about it.. The really nasty ones pretend to be your friend, to be vulnerable and need your help, to be one of the gang etc but are back-stabbing as many as possible along the way.
There are massive drop-out rates in most universities, so many of these people may simply not come back next year.
You must ask yourself this: did you go there to be best mates with these people, or did you go there to get a qualification? If you want the degree, you smply shut yourself off from the rest. Speak if spoken to but don't seek their company or approval. Find a group of friends and associates that you like.
If you don't want the degree, leave, change course, change university or do something else.

There you go then, almost all groups that are mainly girls are bitchy, not nice but it's just life, I myself am setting myself up for a lifetime of this as I want to work in primary schools where usually the only man is the caretaker, but hopefully will have nicer colleagues in work than I do at uni!
jadey...things may be different now and your problem may just be a "woman thing" BUT
University is the chance to meet people of different social standings, different creeds and religious beliefs. public school and state edicated students.
Getting away from,in some case, over bearing parents and intergrating into university society.
Sport, debating societies, drama clubs, parties and I could go on.
This is an opportunity for you to study, get a degree and make your way into the ups and downs of life. hopefully well prepared.
Stop whingeing an blaming others and pull you finger out.

Im not in the sligtest whining. Its really upsetting when your in a group at uni dong practical work and people are so mean and horrible to each other, name calling, bitching...it really affects me cos im so sensitive & I don't like it. It too has an effect on my actual studying as I can't concentrate and come home upset! I know its an amazing opertunity being at uni, meeting people from different places, some with higher standings within society. I didn't for a second doubt the oppertunity. Just the girls in the class are really bitchy & it reall gets me down!
