Swine Flu Virus - I heard what they said, but what did they mean?
20 Answers
Have you seen the TV ad giving advice about stopping the spread of Flu? That 'orrible man sneezes all over the place, another man touches the buttons then holds his wifes' hand? Well, years ago, my doctor told me that a virus can't be spread in that manner. He said a virus cannot live outside of anyones body. It is passed from person to person by bodily contact, not wafted on the air or from hard surfaces. That's what they said back in the Eighties when there was all the fuss about HIV. That a virus can only be passed on by bodily contact. So what's happened since then? Have viruses changed? Does anyone know?

As the saying goes 'coughs & sneezes spreads diseases' - they say the cold virus can even be caught through your eyes.
Poltergeist is right - a virus can live for a short time outside the body - so perhaps when an infected person sneezes another person in the firing line can then breath it in, through nose or mouth - so hence it is passed on.
That advert is gross - but the fact it is on your hands then you touch your face, eyes, mouth etc, the virus enters your body.
The motto of the story - ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS.
I always say to my son when he moans about washing his hands - a few seconds washing your hands before eating can save 1 week in bed with a stomach bug - or now pig flu !!

Poltergeist HIV is carried in saliva according to the Dept of Health and Human Services center for disease control and prevention.
The guy who caught it from his friend(the groom who contracted it in Mexico) obviously caught it from airborne germs.
If it spreads as easily as the media are saying we've probably already got it anyway.
